Last Wednesday we completed the planting of nearly 3000 wetland fynbos and indigenous plants in Muizenberg Park. This marks the completion of our work for this year!

But we are not done! We will return next year to focus on other areas of the Park, restoring fynbos beyond the newly created wetlands.

In collaboration with and , the Friends of Muizenberg Park are proving that urban spaces can—and must—be reclaimed. Biodiversity isn’t just something that happens in faraway reserves; it starts right here in our community.

Thanks to Divvie Maritz for this wonderful video!

It takes a village... and a plumber.

FOMP were recently granted permission to restore the ā€˜park office’. This building - located above the old Bowling Clubhouse - is largely storage space, but also contains ablution facilities. The building had been locked up for some years but in that time had been vandalized and stripped.

The restoration process began with the city’s Recreation & Parks department who rewired the building, adding new lights and power points, and restoring the electricity connection.

Then it was time to fix the plumbing.

FOMP put the word out and well-known local plumber Charles Watt (Watt’s Plumbing) immediately put up his hand. In no time at all, he had generously offered to carry out the work at cost. And then, after sharing this story with one of his suppliers, Tokai Sanitary and Plumbing Supplies, they offered the replacement sanitaryware and fittings for free. Thanks guys!

So now the park office has a functional toilet, urinal, and hand basin, all connected to a working sewer system.

At this time we’re not able to keep ablutions open all the time - the city requires that ablutions have full-time attendants in order to avoid vandalism - but in the meantime we can offer the ablutions to those who wish to hold events in the park.

Thanks again to Watt’s Plumbing who’ve been serving the Muizenberg community since 1999. You can reach them on 021 788 1114 or [email protected].

And of course, thanks to Fabian Donnoli at Tokai Sanitary and Plumbing Supplies, for their generous support. You can reach them on 021 745 3225 or [email protected].
