South Africa | Smart Energy Management for Solar Logistics
Smart energy management plays a vital role in transport and logistics, where reliable power supports daily operations, fleet efficiency, and reduced diesel use.
Resurgent Energy and NextDrive have been installing solar systems on logistics trailers since 2017. These systems support tail lifts, security systems, and nitrogen refrigeration systems across South Africa.
The project includes more than 2,000 units in the field, maintained nationally by the team. For Shoprite Holdings, including Shoprite and Checkers, the system saved just over 3.25 million litres of diesel during the 2024/2025 financial year.
Products used:
• 150/35 MPPT
• 24-24 5A DCDC
• BP65
• Busbar 150A 4P
• Isolator switch 275A
• Mega Fuse Holder
• MultiPlus-II KVA
• Cerbo-S
For 2026, an additional 200 units are being installed for Shoprite’s growing fleet, as well as for Coca-Cola Beverages.
On the development side, the team created a mobile three-phase solution to hybridise a diesel-electric refrigeration system on trucks, in collaboration with Spheros, Transfrig. Units are currently operating with Food Lover’s Market and Faircape, saving an average of 900 litres of diesel per month.
Victron Energy’s role in smart energy management is reflected in applications like this, where solar, batteries, inverters, protection, and control components work together to support practical outcomes across mobile systems.
Result: For the 2024/2025 financial year, Shoprite Holdings saved just over 3.25 million litres of diesel through the system.
