A-Thermal Retort Technologies - Pty Ltd A-Thermal Retort Technologies, Leaders in Hazardous Waste Treatment in South Africa. To our knowledge this will be a world first for this process.

Resource Recovery From Waste, Waste To Energy Solutions, Zero To Landfill Waste Management A-Thermal Retort Technologies (PTY) LTD specializes in the thermal treatment of hazardous waste for over 20 years. We primarily service the pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturing industries. Our unique Thermal Desorption Plant utilizes pyrolysis technology that is capable of achieving a 99.9999 % (six 9

’s) destruction of all hazardous waste. Our company has now completed an exciting project that will see us produce a carbonized residue by-product from the variable forms of hazardous waste that is processed through our unique Thermal Desorption Plant at A-Thermal. The carbonized residue has similar properties to coal and can be used as an alternative form of fuel, essentially making A-Thermal a Zero-Landfill Treatment Facility. A-Thermal Retort Technologies is the only company in South Africa that has the capability to permanently dispose of halogenated organic waste, a far more environmentally-friendly alternative to the conventional methods of encapsulation or exportation abroad. An e-waste disposal day will be held on Saturday 4 November for residents to get rid of electronic devices and appliances they no longer need. According to a report by Green Cape, South Africa produces about 322 000 tons of electronic waste a year. Green Cape is an organisation that aims to promote green economy in the Western Cape.
E-waste is the recycling old computers, monitors, old toasters, fridges, batteries and old phones and other appliances. With this in mind, Tshwane ward 83 councillor Siobhan Muller has decided to organise an e-waste day.

“The aim of this day is to make e-Waste recycling accessible to people who do not know where to take their old electronics and appliances,” says Muller.

It is suspected the cause of the fire was the spontaneous combustion of waste due to a combination of the high temperature in the core of the 3m-high waste heap. The heavy smoke hovering over parts of Pretoria East from a burning compost landfill is not toxic and it is expected to continue giving off fumes into the weekend, according to City of Tshwane’s emergency services. More than 100 emergency services personnel were still fighting the blaze at Gartskloof landfill site in Elardus Park yesterday, after the compost landfill was engulfed in flames on Sunday.

Science is increasingly finding ways to convert what was historically considered waste from agriculture, into beneficial products from renewable resources. Prof Annegret Stark outlines the opportunity that biorefining biomass presents for South Africa’s agricultural value chain, creating what she calls a ‘circular economy’ in which waste is continuously recycled.

Cape Town addresses drought, climate change with SA’s first true green bond - In the face of global climate change and the worst drought in living memory, the City of Cape Town issued South Africa’s first true green bond last month. The proceeds of the hugely successful issuance will be used to fund and refinance green projects in the city, including its emergency water-supply schemes designed to address the severe water shortage that has led to the city’s dams reaching worryingly low levels.
