When the grid goes down, the impact on a farm can be much bigger than the loss of electricity.

The severe Western Cape storms in May caused widespread flooding and infrastructure damage across agricultural areas, including Ceres and the wider Witzenberg region. Irrigation, storage and packhouse operations were among those affected by power disruptions.

Some farmers in the Witzenberg area were without electricity for almost a month while damaged infrastructure was being repaired.

For agricultural businesses, electricity is connected to much more than simply keeping the lights on. It can be critical to irrigation, production, cooling, packing, storage and other day-to-day operations.
