Many fires in Paarl and Wellington already this weekend, which caused a lot of damage and misery.

The Paarl based DFW Fire & Rescue as private non profit and privately funded entity, played its role where possible or invited..

Fire doesn't read regulations. It doesn't wait for permission. And it certainly doesn't care about red tape.

A heavy fire season is bearing down on our valley — and this morning we were reminded of something worth saying out loud:

"Rules, regulations and red tape don't fight fires. People — with the right equipment and the right mindset — do. Direct Radio Communication between the private sector and the authorities is the key to success, collaboration and shared frequencies and not closed circuits like the ones we now still see enforced."

That's the whole truth, in two sentences.

When a fire breaks out, it isn't a policy document that runs toward the flames. It's a neighbour with a hose reel. A trained resident with an extinguisher, or a DFW volunteer with some more efficient equipment.
A community that knows who to call, what to send, and how to act in the first critical minutes — long before a single siren sounds is part of the process.

This is exactly why DFW exists.

We are not a government department. We are a privately run non-profit and privately funded company with a community social welfare heart — volunteers, carried by no state, district or municipal budget, but who choose to stand between fire and the families of this valley. Year after year, ever since 2017

But here is the hard part, said plainly: we cannot do it alone — and we were never meant to.
The season ahead will test every one of us, and our single greatest asset is not only a truck or a water tank. It is a connected, prepared, communicating community.

So ahead of the heat, this is our call to you:

Get involved — join as a member, a volunteer, a Community Emergency Responder.
Get equipped — a bucket of sand, an extinguisher, a pump and reel. No longer a luxury.
Get connected — know how to report: a pin, a photo, and what's happening. Communication saves minutes, and minutes save homes.
Get behind us — funds, equipment, skills, or simply spreading the word. Every hand counts.

Because when the smoke rises this summer, it won't be titles, protocols or closed doors that make the difference.

It will be us. Together. Talking to one another. Acting. Ready and capable.

4 fires in the late Sunday afternoon on 4 different spots. 2 structural fires ( historic buildings) both allegedly set alight.

DFW Fire & Rescue NPC to act as first responders to two.

Paarl, 12 October 2026.

Busy afternoon as the DFW emergency control received 4 fire reports in a relative short time, DFW informed Local fire brigade of every case and dispatched DFW teams to 2 cases on Keerweder road at Beaumont Farm ( field fire threatening labour cottages) and historic cottage alight at Bodal Road ( culprits are blamed for arson).

DFW got assisted by local K9 SAPS officers at the cottage Fire Bodal road, where they saw the fire and allegedly helped the resident get some of his belongings out and assisted with the DFW hoselines.

Drakenstein fire and Cape Winelands fire had their hands full at a Historic Thatch covered building at Roggeland road and at a field fire at Paarl North.

The reporting of fires to the DFW works great, as members can send ( or call 084 752 8120) 3 whatsapps with crucial info to the DFW centre ( which info is shared with authorities )

2: a short description of the incident ( like cottage alight)
3: some pictures ( to give an impression to responders what to expect).

The DFW is a private non profit fire response entity, set up to assists its members in emergency situations. It runs a fleet of fire trucks, cruisers and tankers and since 2017 reacted more than 1500 times to act, often as first responders.

House fire Pear street Smarty Town causes havoc.

Quick response by Paarl Fire and DFW Fire & Rescue NPC prevent further disaster.

Paarl 5th October 2026

Around 16.30 the DFW emergency responder group received a request by a local resident from SmartieTown area, to assist with a house fire.

While drakenstein Fire was alerted, the DFW launched 1 tanker/ pumper truck and a DFW cruiser.

Upon arrival, drakenstein Fire brigade ( in numbers) already circled the area and just had the hose lines in. The DFW crew offered assistance on site as the request was to help with water at that stage due to a faulty fire hydrant, which made the DFW commander couple the DFW truck to the Drakenstein Fire truck. A second DFW truck was on site but could stand down.

The fire was brought under control rather fast.

This is again a fire in a semi informal settlement within days. People should be made more fire danger aware.

The DFW, a private non profit company and public benefit organisation, assists the fragile community ( when called upon and when budget allows) as part of its humanitarian aid program and guided by Christian values.

The DFW is looking at a serious fire season ahead.

Be critical regarding any fire hazards around your property.

Paarl, 4th October 2026.

The DFW Fire & Rescue NPC assisted many farmers and landowners with advice to mitigate RISK on their property.

From stack burns of gathered tree or orchards cuttings to grass and shoulder cutting and rubbish removal.
Anything flammable close to a building or the neighbour boarder line is a huge risk.

We see grass everywhere still uncut and already turning yellow/brown...that is now turning into a huge hazard also.

Everybody has a responsibility to prevent the fire by eliminating the hazard.

When you hear our sirens, it's clearly to late.

Do not be caught by the allegedly fast approaching fire season, as it is here already.

Join the DFW member base and secure extra response capability. It is no luxury, given the last fire seasons data of destruction and the success track record of the private DFW Fire response interventions.

Make sure you have available water sources for the fire responders ready!!

Often the lack of available AND accessable water, causes havoc in a fire situation.

Having water nearby in a dame or borehole doesn’t automatically create protection.

It still has to be accessed, moved across distance and challenging terrain, then distributed where coverage is needed.

That takes more than a pump, it takes a complete system working together from the source to the final nozzle.

Wildfire readiness means knowing the water is there and proving you can put it to work.

DFW Fire & Rescue NPC called by community leader to assist.

A fast spreading structural fire in an informal settlement, caused havoc.

Despite brave efforts of the local fire brigade, the fire found its way very quickly through the many wooden structures and with devastating effect.

The DFW was requested by its local CER ( Community Emergency Responders) to assist them in their brave efforts to stop the spread from the North side.

While Drakenstein Fire was informed of the DFW's response and exact location at rhe fire scene, the DFW fire crew and their CER helpers, cut off the fire to the North successfully.

The DFW arrived with a Mercedes truck ( 6000 liter) and 1 cruiser with 2x 60mtr hoselines, which were used by the crews, while from the Mercedes deck, a watercannon coyld successfully throw enough water on the borderline.

Despite all efforts, many structures unfortunately were lost.

We thank our CER members, for showing us the right spot to operate from and for helping actively with throwing water on the right spots and we thank the local residents for their great support and cooperation.

Fighting fire is a matter which should involve us all.

The heat and thick smoke, took its toll and left a few fire fighters exhausted and drained. We say thank you to the local fire commanders of Drakenstein fire brigade for the great cooperation and we gladly assist when needed.

Our prayers go out for those who lost all. Should people be willing to donate food or clothing or materials, we gladly assist as collection point and coordination.

🚨 URGENT MISSING PERSON ALERT – WELLINGTON / BAINSKLOOF AREA 🚨

MISSING: JAN LINGENFELDER
Age: 55 years

Last known area: Leeuwtuin Estate, Wellington / Bainskloof Road area
Clothing: As shown in the attached photograph

DFW Fire & Rescue is assisting with an active search for Mr Jan Lingenfelder (55), who went missing while visiting family at Leeuwtuin Estate, Wellington.

Jan went for a walk monday afternoon around 17.00 hrs without his cellphone and did not return. It is believed that he may have intended walking in the direction of Cannetsfontijn Farm, close to the Bainskloof area.

⚠️ Jan has a heart condition, which makes locating him as soon as possible particularly important.

Family members reported Jan missing to the DFW Fire & Rescue Centre at approximately 23:25 on Monday evening.
Mountain Rescue and Metro Rescue were subsequently informed and a coordinated search operation was initiated.

The search has continued today, but Jan has not yet been located.

A multi-agency search is currently underway involving:

• South African Police Service
• Mountain Rescue
• Metro Rescue
• Local Fire & Rescue services
• Security organisations
• Community members and other supporting organisations

An Incident Command Centre (IC) has been established at Leeuwtuin Estate Farm on Bainskloof Road, from where the search operation is being coordinated. ( 0786937888 )

At 16.43hrs, the DFW emergency controlroom recieved a call regardingva young boy (11) hit by a vehicle, close by Meadow Feeds and Kaap Agri in Paarl.

DFW responder D.Coetzee, who happened to be close by in his patrol car, took care of the young patient and of the situation, awaiting further support from traffic and police and the requested ambulance.

Children and the elderly always get a high priority.

Peak hr traffic caused delays, but 17.04 traffic services could arrive and 17.09 Metro ambulance arrived and loaded the youngster.

The DFW controllers and the serious private radio control network, which the DFW build over the last 10 years, played and proofed it's part and updates and further info was constantly shared between responders and backoffice.

We thank all our colleques and responders for the great cooperation.
We wish the youngster a speedy recovery.

Fifteen minutes. That's all it took. 🔥

This is exactly why the DFW started the First 15 Minutes project — and this morning, right here in Paarl, we watched why it matters ..play out in real time..

06:54 — A Fidelity ADT officer reported a house fire in Thys Lewis Street, Smarty Town to the DFW emergency control WhatsApp group.
He did exactly what we ask of anyone reporting a fire, accident or incident:
a pin location,
a photo of the scene,
and one clear line of what's happening.

Immediately — Our Paarl operator relayed everything to the Drakenstein Fire Department by WhatsApp, while our control room in Bellville phoned the fire brigade on the landline as well — two channels, so no detail could be lost or garbled.

06:59 — Confirmation: Drakenstein Fire was en route.
07:09 — First truck on scene.
07:14 — Two more trucks arrive.

That is a fast, well-coordinated response — and full credit to the Drakenstein Fire Department for getting there quickly. Because the call-out was already rolling and the crews were inbound, there was no need for DFW to add units.

And yet.

By the time the trucks arrived, the structure was already gone.

That is how fast it goes now. Read that again.

Here's the hard truth most people don't know: the homes we build today burn far faster than the homes of 30 years ago. Modern materials ignite at lower temperatures and far greater speed. A fire that once took 30 minutes to reach full intensity can now get there in 15 to 20.
That shrinking window is a nightmare for any fire service — no matter how fast they drive.

Which is why the first 15 minutes belong to you.

Before any siren, before any truck, the person who can change the outcome is the one already standing there.
That's the whole heart of our First 15 Minutes project: making sure communities and property owners know what to do — and never just stand and watch.

It doesn't have to be complicated:

A bucket of sand by the stove or fire.
A fire extinguisher you actually know how to use.
For those who can, an extra water tank, a motor pump and a hose reel on standby.

None of this is a luxury. In 2026, it is a necessity.

Fire is the most devastating force there is. It does not discriminate — rich or poor, big or small — and the scars it leaves last forever. To the family who lost their home this morning: our hearts are with you.

Fighting fires is one mission. Teaching people to prevent them, and to act in those first critical minutes, is the other. Help us with the second one.
