Gold Back in Play for $1,700 as Virus Fears Energize Safe Havens

Beaten back from its earlier shot at $1,700, gold found vigor again Thursday as U.S. authorities raced to fight the spread of the coronavirus in the world’s largest economy, prompting investors to rush into safe havens.

Gold futures and spot prices of bullion rose more than 1% each, climbing the key $1,650 hurdle after California declared a state of emergency amid the outbreak that has killed 11 Americans so far and infected more than 100 others.

Wall Street’s S&P 500 plunged about 3% while the dollar index, which measures the greenback against six currencies, slipped 0.5%, facilitating gold’s path toward another attempt at the $1,700 target, which it missed by less than $10 last month.

“The size of your success is measured by the strength of your desire, the size of your dream and how you handle disappointment along the way.”

“The most important word in the world of money is cash flow. The second most important word is leverage.”

Gold Surges As Trump Demands More Easing From Pliant Fed

Gold prices surged on Tuesday in response to a surprise half-point cut to the Federal Reserve’s key interest rate - and expectations that the Fed will be unable to resist political pressure to cut further as the coronavirus spreads across the U.S.

By 11:30 AM ET (1630 GMT), gold futures for delivery on the Comex exchange were up 2.6% at $1,636.00 a troy ounce, within 3.5% of the seven-year high that they hit in February as the Covid-19 virus started to disrupt public life in Europe. Spot gold was up 2.8% at $1,635.65.

Silver futures rose 2.7% to $17.19 an ounce while platinum futures rose 1.1% to $868.80. Copper futures, a rough proxy for expected industrial activity, fell 1.4% to $2.56 a pound.

Afternoon People,

Here is a quote to cheer you up for the day if it might be feeling long and you just need a pick me up

“Failure inspires winners. And failure defeats losers. It is the biggest secret of winners. It’s the secret that losers do not know. The greatest secret of winners is that failure inspires winning; thus, they’re not afraid of losing.” Robert Kiyosaki

Euro falls to four-month low on weak German data, dollar gains

The euro fell to its lowest since October on Friday after German industrial output for December recorded its biggest decline in a decade and strong employment numbers in the United States encouraged investors to buy the dollar.

The dollar has gained in recent sessions from solid data and because of fragile risk sentiment, as investors gauge the economic ramifications from the coronavirus outbreak in China, where the death toll continues to climb.

The focus for Friday is non-farm payrolls data, which are expected to confirm that the U.S. labour market is in robust health.
