Inspiration and perspective on the pandemic, by CS Lewis. The catastrophe created in our collective mind often has way more impact than the actual event...

" In one way we think a great deal too much of the atomic bomb. How are we to live in an atomic age?” I am tempted to reply: “Why, as you would have lived in the sixteenth century when the plague visited London almost every year, or as you would have lived in a Viking age when raiders from Scandinavia might land and cut your throat any night; or indeed, as you are already living in an age of cancer, an age of syphilis, an age of paralysis, an age of air raids, an age of railway accidents, an age of motor accidents.”

In other words, do not let us begin by exaggerating the novelty of our situation. Believe me, dear sir or madam, you and all whom you love were already sentenced to death before the atomic bomb was invented: and quite a high percentage of us were going to die in unpleasant ways. We had, indeed, one very great advantage over our ancestors—anesthetics; but we have that still. It is perfectly ridiculous to go about whimpering and drawing long faces because the scientists have added one more chance of painful and premature death to a world which already bristled with such chances and in which death itself was not a chance at all, but a certainty.

This is the first point to be made: and the first action to be taken is to pull ourselves together. If we are all going to be destroyed by an atomic bomb, let that bomb when it comes find us doing sensible and human things—praying, working, teaching, reading, listening to music, bathing the children, playing tennis, chatting to our friends over a pint and a game of darts—not huddled together like frightened sheep and thinking about bombs. They may break our bodies (a microbe can do that) but they need not dominate our minds.

True to his inspirationalist nature, our MD, Shaheen Hoosen, shared some inspiring news -

The Green Buffalos is an organisation that aims to empower waste pickers and provide them with sustainable employment. It will help formalise the work that waste pickers do as well as upskill them.

The organisation was formed by Sean Jory-Burgess and Shaun Slabber and there are 27 waste pickers now associated with the Green Buffalos. The organisation plans to work in conjunction with a number of other organisations to encourage community members to separate their waste so that it can be recycled efficiently.

Waste pickers associated with the Green Buffalos will be provided with a bicycle and a trailer attached, and a uniform which indicates who they work for and their name. These bikes will provide a safer form of transportation for waste recyclers.

Children experience poverty very differently from adults because they must depend on others to meet their needs. They don’t have control over household finances or the power to make decisions.

A child is said to be multidimensionally poor when they are living in households where they are deprived of at least three out of seven dimensions of poverty - Health, Housing, Nutrition, Protection, Education, Information, Water and Sanitation.

Child poverty and deprivation hinders the physical, psychological, and social development of a child. Children who experience multidimensional poverty will miss out on key aspects of their life which usually help them develop and reach their full potential.

The proportion of respondents who reported experiencing hunger since the start of lockdown increased from 4,3% to 7,0%. The reported increase in hunger amongst respondents is indicative of the risk of greater food insecurity in the country because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

How do we solve these challenges and protect our children?

Covid 19 disease at home - what are the symptoms?

07/07/2020

Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world anew. This one is no different. It is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next. We can choose to walk through it, dragging the carcasses of our prejudice and hatred, our avarice, our data banks and dead ideas, our dead rivers and smoky skies behind us. Or we can walk through lightly, with little luggage, ready to imagine another world. And ready to fight for it.
