*Synopsis:*
During May, June, July and August 2026, a number of housebreaking and theft incidents were reported within the Mountain Rise policing area, displaying a similar modus operandi. In the identified cases:

The suspects gained entry to residences during the early hours while occupants were asleep by using bolt cutters to cut through burglar bars protecting open windows. Cellphones were predominantly targeted and stolen.

The incidents were investigated and relevant information was shared amongst the role-players. During May 2026, one of the stolen cellphones was identified as being advertised for sale on social media. Attempts were made to arrange a meeting with the advertiser; however, the suspect became evasive and subsequently went into hiding. Social media monitoring continued. During mid-August 2026, it was observed that the suspect had changed cellphone numbers but had resumed advertising cellphones for sale. His social media profile was closely monitored.

On Friday, 21 August 2026, contact was initiated with the suspect, who believed he was communicating with a potential purchaser. Communication continued over the weekend, during which valuable information was obtained and shared with the operational team. A meeting was arranged with the suspect at a local shopping centre for Monday, 24 August 2026. The operational team was briefed and a tactical plan was formulated. Members deployed strategically and maintained observation while awaiting the suspect’s arrival. The suspect was subsequently spotted at the agreed location. At the appropriate time, the operational team moved in and successfully placed him under arrest. Simultaneously, three additional suspects who were all travelling together with the first suspect in a white Nissan Tiida attempted to flee the scene but were intercepted by members and also placed under arrest. Care was taken to minimise any potential danger to immediate bystanders during the course of this operation.

The suspects were transported to Mountain Rise SAPS, where three suspects were formally charged, while the fourth suspect was released after obtaining his statement. All relevant exhibits were seized with reference. The vehicle allegedly used in the commission of the crime was also seized and impounded at Mkondeni VSU for safe keeping and further inspection. The arrested suspects were detained at Pietermaritzburg Central SAPS free of visible injuries. The investigation remains ongoing, with the suspects expected to be linked to additional housebreaking and theft cases as further enquiries are conducted.

The successful operation demonstrates the value of intelligence-led policing, continuous social-media monitoring, information sharing and effective coordination between the various role-players. The arrest of the suspects represents a significant breakthrough in the investigation of the identified housebreaking cases and contributes towards disrupting the activities of those involved in property-related crime within the Mountain Rise policing area.

Coming out of the festive season, The staff of Insignia Security are still committed to going the extra mile for our clients. At 17h33 we received a call from one of our S/O's reporting a tap that was flowing continuously at our clients site. Due to the holidays and time of day this can only be repaired on Monday. Romano (Security manager) responded to the situation with tools and a pack of tap washers and matched the one for the tap. Romano and the S/O Ayanda, that was on duty took it upon themselves to get the tap repaired saving the client the hassle on Monday and also preventing the waste of water throughout the weekend.
