Attended the Nanreen-Tutu Symposium on Environmental and Marine Science hosted by the University of Cape Town. Participants included academics from overseas, African countries and locals. Presentations were made by eminent scientists.

The Nansen‑Tutu Centre is located at the University of Cape Town. It conducts training and research in Marine Environmental Science. It was inspired by Nobel Peace Laureates Fridtjof Nansen and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the Centre blends science and humanity to serve Africa.
They study the South Atlantic, Indian, and Southern Oceans. builds prediction systems for climate and fisheries, trains young African researchers through fellowships and exchanges, supports communities with knowledge for coastal management, tourism, and food security

It was an exciting knowledge-parked two-day affairs.

Final Materials SRM Workshop at Westin Cape Town International Convention Centre organized by the African Climate Forum, University of Capetown.

A deliberation on solar radiation modification using geo- engineering. This involves releasing aerosol at the stratosphere to reflect solar radiation back to space. This is one of the mitigation measures to combat climate change.

Several papers were presented

We rounded up the workshop with a dinner at the Grand Beach, Waterfront

ROADSIDE PROMOTION OF e-WASTE MANAGEMENT
It is not often you stumble on your former colleagues doing their professional things after your heart on a busy road in an urban city. They caught It my attention on Thursday whilst i was in the traffic. The memories of the initiative swelled in my head Had to find a parking place to join the campaign.

Electronic waste are cell phones, computers, electronic clocks, etc. Their management is increasing becoming a serious issue globally with the proliferation of smart devices whose service years are about 3 years They need to be safely disposed off at the end of ther service years. But we are promoting the reuse of their components. The then KwaZulu-Natal department of agriculture and environmental affairs initiated a system wherein e-Wastes in all government officesc are deposited at Cedara for dismantling, or refurbishing . Components are sold to recyclers and reusers. My colleagues are now extending this program to the general public to drop their old electronic materials. There is also a programe for white waste management for the refrigerators, microwave cookers , air conditioners, etc.

It was really a day in my professional life witness and be part of it all. Also went into the office to see my younger colleagues. So proud of them all.

NIGERIA AND THE RIEMANN HYPOTHESIS:
Nigeria! It is indeed represents a never-ending struggle, akin to the Sisyphean task. As for the Riemann hypothesis, it is a significant mathematical conjecture that remains unproven to this day.

The Riemann hypothesis is named after Bernhard Riemann, a German mathematician who proposed it in 1859. It relates to the distribution of prime numbers and the behavior of the Riemann zeta function. The hypothesis suggests that all non-trivial zeros of the zeta function lie on a specific line in the complex plane, known as the critical line.

Meanwhile, the Riemann hypothesis has deep implications for number theory, and its proof or disproof would have far-reaching consequences in mathematics. Despite extensive efforts by mathematicians over the years, no one has been able to conclusively prove or disprove the hypothesis. It remains one of the most significant unsolved problems in mathematics.

While Nigeria faces its own set of challenges, both social and political, the reference to the Sisyphean task and the Riemann hypothesis by Sir Dele Farotimi serves to highlight the complexity and seemingly insurmountable nature of these issues. Just as the Riemann hypothesis remains an open question, the resolution of Nigeria's challenges requires sustained effort, perseverance, and innovative solutions.

Did you know that in Ethiopia, clocks are upside down with our 6:00 at their 12:00. The day starts at 7am instead of 12am and ends at 6:59am.

Ethiopia is the only country in the world with 13 months and their New Year starts in September which implies that they are 7½ years behind Nigeria. This means they are 7 months into 2016 while we are in 2023

Ethiopia is also the only African country with its own alphabets. It has the world’s oldest living alphabets – Ethiopic – and probably one of the longest with its 345 letters. In addition, the oldest fossil skeleton of a human was discovered in Ethiopia.

Interestingly, Ethiopia is one of the only TWO nations in the world never to have been occupied. This is despite the Italians twice trying and failing to take the country...
