The advent of mandatory Energy Usage standards in South Africa was occasioned by our then Minister for Trade and Industry – Rob Davies signing amendments to the National Buildings for energy usage into law on the 09-09-2011, and after the six months grace period thereafter buildings began to have inter alia thermal insulation in the roofs and lighting which used far less electricity. Some owners have bought into double glazing, which was then a novelty. In addition all new houses (and many other building types) began to be provided with solar water heaters and heat pumps....
