As we reflect on a powerful weekend of community spirit and wellbeing, Bonakude is proud to have supported the Phantane Durban Street Mile race held at the Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse on Sunday, 31 May. In alignment with our BonaCARE values, this initiative reinforces our commitment to promoting a healthy lifestyle and improving the quality of life within our communities.

With 30 of our employees participating in the race, the energy and enthusiasm were truly inspiring. Along the route, Bonakude also set up a hydration station, ensuring runners stayed refreshed and supported throughout the race.

Together, we continue to run towards a healthier, stronger and more connected future.

Since joining us in 2021, Ntombi Matebese has been a dedicated and valued member of our team. As our IT Administrator, she plays a vital role in ensuring our systems run smoothly, enabling the rest of the team to work without disruption. She tackles challenges behind the scenes so others can stay focused on their work.

Unpacking the Auditor-General’s latest reports, it is clear that unauthorised, irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure (UIFW) is no longer a footnote, but a systemic crisis draining billions from South Africa’s municipalities.

Zipho Mdluli outlines how municipalities can turn compliance commitments into meaningful, on-the-ground action by:

- strengthening internal controls,
- professionalising leadership,
- embedding consequence management, and
- implementing a practical 90-day turnaround plan.

With strong governance and ethical leadership, real change is possible. By adopting a zero-tolerance approach to UIFW expenditure, municipalities can unlock resources needed for reliable water, electricity and roads.
