LIFE’S A BEACH

Nestled on the edge of the dune forest in Munster is a spacious beach cottage called Otter Cove Beach House. It overlooks a conserved wetland and lagoon, flowing into a beautiful little bay called Auntie’s Bay – that was the original name as Auntie used to go down there in her ox wagon to bathe in the early 1900’s. The river flowing into the lagoon is Kandlovu, which, from the air looks like an elephant’s head. The Munster Conservancy in this area of the south coast are very involved in protecting not only the wildlife but dune forest as well and most of the community who live down there collect all the discarded bottles, plastic and rubbish washed up on the beach, to keep our beautiful beaches clean. We are privileged to have not only abundant bird life, but animals too – otters have been seen very occasionally in the early morning, but we have only observed their footprints. There are also dassies, genets, bushbuck and a real treat down there, the tiny blue duiker.
