Fireflies across North America are turning off, and it’s not because of nature. Over 130 species are now in trouble, including the rare amber comet firefly, which only survives in a few damp Texas grasslands.
Cities are swallowing up their habitats, backyard lights are jamming their mating signals, and pesticides are poisoning their soil. Even heatwaves and droughts are throwing off their life cycles.
Their disappearance signals deeper trouble for frogs, birds, and bees. But it’s not too late. You can help by dimming outdoor lights, skipping the chemicals, and letting your yard grow wild with native plants and moisture.
Join citizen science groups and track their glow. Saving fireflies means saving the delicate nighttime language of the natural world. Let’s not wait until their light fades for good.
