Learning where our waste goes ♻️

Sinazo and the Masifunde After School Enviro Club recently visited The Waste Trade Company as part of a cleanup and recycling drive launching this September.

The visit gave learners a closer look at what happens to waste after it is collected, where recyclable materials go, and how they move through the recycling process.

It was also a great opportunity to introduce the idea of the circular economy — helping learners understand the full life cycle of waste, from the school environment to the recycling centre and, ultimately, back into useful materials.

When schools and learners come together, small actions can create lasting change. 🌍

Last week, The Waste Trade Company visited Chapman High School and their WESSA EWASA Eco Club for a recycling collection. ♻️

The teachers and learners have been hard at work with their paper and e-waste recycling drive, helping to keep valuable materials out of landfill and encouraging better recycling habits within the school community.

Well done to the Chapman High team for keeping the momentum going and making recycling part of everyday school life. 🌍

A special moment for TWTC at Volkswagen Group Africa’s 75th birthday celebration 🎊

As The Waste Trade Company takes over the Health, Safety and Environment mascot, Zevu, we were proud to see Zevu make his official debut at the VWGA 75th birthday celebration at the Volkswagen Pavilion in Kariega.

A memorable milestone, celebrating 75 years of Volkswagen Group Africa while highlighting the continued importance of health, safety and environmental responsibility.

Happy 75th birthday, VWGA! 🎉

A little look back at the SPAR Trade Show held last Thursday. ♻️

After a very busy event, The Waste Trade Company and Packa-Ching made sure the clean-up was handled properly from start to finish.

The skip bin was completely filled by Thursday afternoon and collected first thing on Friday morning. Our team also completed two trips during the event breakdown, ensuring that all remaining waste and recyclable material was removed.

The field was left just as spotless as we found it before the event, with the Packa-Ching crew, Eunifred and Emmy onsite making sure everything was cleared and the final logistics were taken care of.

To top it off, a selection of goodies donated by SPAR and participating traders after the event were collected and passed on to charity. 💚

A solid team effort, a clean site, and a little extra good coming out of a very big day.

Just sharing a few special moments from our recent recycling talk with the Recycling Champions at Khanyisa Special School in KwaMagxaki. 💚♻️

Khanyisa is a school for learners who are blind and partially sighted, and this was such a meaningful session for our team.

With the guidance of their teacher, Miss Lamla Smaile, the learners were able to explore recycling in a hands-on way, touching, seeing and feeling the different materials that can be recycled and learning how each one should be separated.

What impressed us most was how quickly they caught on. The learners have already managed to fill a skip with outdated paperwork, books and old textbooks, while carefully separating the white Braille paper so that it can be recycled as white paper.

A big Green Fingers shout-out to Miss Lamla, the support staff and every learner involved in the recycling project at Khanyisa Special School. 💚💚💚

This is exactly what recycling education is about, making it practical, inclusive and something everyone can take part in. ♻️

Finished your milk, juice or custard carton?

Before recycling it:
✅ Empty it
✅ Rinse it
✅ Flatten it
The Waste Trade Company accepts long-life milk cartons, juice cartons and custard cartons when they are empty, clean and flattened.

Flattening cartons and cardboard boxes also saves space in your recycling area and helps make collections easier to manage.
A small preparation step can make a big difference to the quality of your recycling.

Do you check the number on your plastic before recycling it?

The Waste Trade Company accepts selected products from these categories:
1️⃣ PET: Clear, blue, green and brown plastic bottles
2️⃣ HDPE: Detergent, toiletry, dairy and storage bottles
3️⃣ PVC: Pipe offcuts
4️⃣ LDPE: Selected soft plastic wrap
5️⃣ PP: Yoghurt, ice cream and medication containers, plus lids
Remember: a recycling number does not guarantee that every product in that category is accepted. For example, TWTC accepts PET bottles but does not list PET food trays as accepted.

Four steps can improve the quality of your recycling:
- EMPTY it.
- RINSE it.
- DRY it.
- SORT it.
Food and liquid residue can contaminate recyclable materials, create unpleasant odours and make storage and processing more difficult.

You do not need to use litres of water or scrub every container until it looks new. Remove the contents, give the item a quick rinse where necessary and allow it to drain before recycling.

Clean recycling is better recycling.
