In this video, Rumana Mahomed and Daniel Marsh explain that “collation” is a legal principle requiring significant lifetime benefits received by one child – such as a donation, unpaid loan or financial advance – to be taken into account when distributing a parent’s estate. It is intended to promote fairness among heirs, rather than requiring repayment. Collation generally applies to children who inherit, but a will can expressly exempt beneficiaries. It is recommended to clearly address collation in your will to avoid uncertainty and future disputes.

She says AI is useful for general research and administrative tasks, but should never replace professional financial advice or human judgement. Malissa urges investors not to upload ID numbers, banking details, wills, trust documents or financial statements to AI platforms, and says responsible financial services providers must use approved, governed AI tools that comply with South Africa’s POPIA legislation.
