Over a few posts we will post valuable information regarding PEPPER SPRAY.
Hopefully this will answer some questions and make people more knowledgeable on the product.
Let’s start with this:
“Cheap Defensive Sprays”
Many cheap products may be purchased at gun shops and general dealers. Most of these “cheap” products use low cost ingredients such as low grade pepper extracts or other substances. Even peppermint is used as a substitute ingredient. These low grade products may have little or no effect on a determined aggressor or even make him / her angrier.
Before we go deeper, let’s run with the basics! What is pepper spray????
INTRODUCTION TO OLEORESIN CAPSICUM
The active ingredient in “OC” is a powerful colourless phenolic amide called capsaicin. It is the capsaicin which gives peppers their heat.
“OC” is an inflammatory agent, which acts on mucus membranes. Contact with particles results in an immediate burning, tearing, swelling and closing of the eyes causing a temporary loss of vision.
Inhalation of the particles will result in the swelling of the mucus membranes lining the breathing passages causing coughing and a temporary shortness of breath.
Most people will not be able to keep their eyes open after being sprayed therein with “OC”, whether or not they can feel the pain. The involuntary closing of the eyes is a psychological response to “OC” and not a response to pain.
Forensic science research does not foresee any long-term health risks associated with the use of “OC”. “OC” is the same “pepper” found in or on foodstuff in the food industry, e.g., chips, etc.
