Port Elizabeth Heroes -
Station : South End
We had a fire incident at one of our clients today and phoned the South End Fire dept for assistance, from the phone operator to Senior Officer-Maantjies, these guys performed their duties excellent and skilfully.
I thanked each one personally and said we will write an appreciation letter to the Chief and Mr Best to ensure they get the acknowledgement and praise they deserve for the professionalism and care to the residents.
A situation can happen so quickly and training for any fire incident are not always the same, but staying calm and executing a safety practice assessment will ensure a safe outcome.
I recalled, in my training by lead fire fighter Keith Donaldson, if your gut tells you to wait for help, rather wait.
Today I had to make such a call and it paid off. A situation that could have taken a smothering fire, that was contained inside a roof, that would have caused a terrible backlash or backdraft through the manhole, if opened.
(A backlash/backdraft is a rapid or explosive burning of superheated gasses in a fire aka smoke explodes and causes fire to spread faster due to more oxygen to the flames.
Training + Gut instinct = Safety to all.
These Heroes opened the manhole and the blacklash did happen (as predicted), luckily no injuries and with minimal damage to the roof/building infrastructure.
The Care Centre’s, Management and staff practice fire drills often and today their training paid off with zero injuries.
After extinguishing the fire, these gentlemen packed away their firefighting equipment and made sure all residents were safe and unharmed and assessed the building from any further flare ups.
I am going to ask let's share this post so when you see them around town a simple hoot or a Hello can show appreciation for the duty's they preform.
