Global LPG Day isn't just another lame day on the calendar like National Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day (yes, that's apparently a real thing).
Today, 7 June, is Global LPG Day — a day dedicated to raising awareness of one of the world's most versatile, reliable and under-appreciated energy sources.
In South Africa, LPG is still often viewed as something dangerous, or simply a backup plan when the electricity goes out. The reality couldn't be further from the truth.
Across Europe, North America and many other developed economies, LPG plays a major role in powering homes, restaurants, farms, factories and commercial operations. It's trusted, safe when installed correctly, highly efficient and an important part of a diversified energy strategy.
LPG helps:
✔ Provide reliable energy when the grid cannot
✔ Enable cleaner cooking and heating
✔ Reduce indoor air pollution
✔ Support businesses, agriculture and industry
✔ Create jobs throughout the supply chain
✔ Lower emissions compared to many traditional fuels
For South Africans, LPG is more than convenience. It's energy security.
Whether it's a family preparing dinner, a restaurant serving customers during load shedding, a farmer keeping operations running, or an industrial process that cannot afford downtime, LPG keeps things moving.
The theme for Global LPG Day 2026 is ”LPG: Pass It Forward.”
At Gas Centre, we see every day how LPG helps people and businesses operate more efficiently, more reliably and with greater independence from an increasingly strained electricity network.
Perhaps it's time we stopped thinking of LPG as the alternative and started recognising it as an essential part of South Africa's energy future.
Happy Global LPG Day.
