Ever wondered what the biggest myth is about how universities work with industry?

Most people encounter universities as students. They see the training side, and rarely the other side of what a university is set up to do. That's where the misunderstanding tends to start, and it's what shapes how industry ends up thinking about universities as partners.

Watch the video for our full take on it.

The academic side of a university is built for academic conversations. Papers, peer review, publication cycles. That's how it should be. It's what makes the depth real.

But when industry has a commercial question, that same infrastructure can feel out of reach. The vocabulary is different. The timelines are different. The measures of success are different.

NWU Enterprises exists to bridge that gap. Same access to the university's depth, delivered through a company that understands industry timelines, industry language, and industry outcomes. You bring the question in the terms that make sense to your operation. We translate it into a project that pulls in the right researchers, on the right terms, for the right result.

The knowledge doesn't change. The way it reaches you does.

The research process cannot be rushed.

Every step in it exists for a reason. Skip one because the deadline is close, and the finding at the end loses the weight the whole project was built to carry. Speed up a stage that needed time, and the answer that arrives is faster, but no longer defensible.

A biased answer isn't defensible. It's just a faster route to a finding nobody can rely on.

Protecting the process is what makes the delivery worth having.

The drive of NWU Enterprises is simple.

Go out and find the opportunities. Research the answers.

Most consulting works the other way around. A firm waits to be briefed, then applies what it already knows to the question in front of it. Useful, but limited to the ground that's already been covered.

NWU Enterprises is set up differently. The starting point is going out into industry, listening for the questions that haven't yet been asked, and then bringing the research capacity of the university to bear on them. The answer doesn't have to exist yet. It just has to be worth finding.

That's the drive. Opportunities first. Answers built from research.

NWU Enterprises' value proposition sits in one line.

Access to a vast pool of knowledge, across every discipline and industry the university touches.

The point isn't any single field. It's the range. A mining question rarely stays inside mining. It reaches into metallurgy, into data science, into sustainability, into industrial engineering, into human factors, into legal, into economics. Every one of those disciplines lives inside a university already, alongside the researchers who spend their working lives inside them.

What NWU Enterprises does is make that range accessible. The right combination of expertise, assembled for a specific question, delivered as a project.

The knowledge was always there. What we bring is the route to it.

Directed research is what happens when academic capability is pointed at a specific commercial question.

Directed research starts with a question that matters to an operation. It scopes the work around what that operation needs to decide. It produces findings that are ready to be acted on, not filed away for a journal submission.

The academic depth is still there. The rigour is still there. What's added is the direction, and the transfer of that knowledge into practical value.

A mine has two options when it needs answers backed by research.

Build the capacity in-house, or partner with someone who has it already.

Building it in-house means hiring across disciplines. A metallurgist. A geologist. A data scientist. A sustainability specialist. An industrial engineer. And paying to keep them on the books whether there's a project for them or not. For most operations, the cost outweighs the return.

A research partner works differently. The disciplines are already assembled, already networked, already available to be pulled in when the question calls for them. You pay for the expertise you need, when you need it, on the project that needs it.

The knowledge is the same. The economics are what change.

Deciding a project is worth doing is only the first step. The second, and the one that determines whether the value actually gets realised, is setting up the brief that will carry it.

A brief is where value turns into a plan. It names the scope. It sets the constraints. It defines who's accountable, what success looks like, and how the work will be measured. Without it, the value stays theoretical. The project drifts, the deadline shifts, the deliverable arrives shaped by whoever pushed hardest along the way.

A properly scoped brief is what turns a good idea into a defensible piece of work. It's the difference between agreeing something is worth doing and actually being able to prove, at the end, that it was done well.

Value tells you why to run the project. The brief is what makes sure the project is worth running.

A researcher's focus is fragile. It's what makes the work defensible, and it's the first thing that gets compromised when a project is rushed.

The rule is simple. You follow the research process, and you let it move at the pace it needs to move at. You don't shortcut a step because the deadline is close. You don't skip an inconvenient finding because it doesn't support the direction the project started in. You don't push a researcher toward the answer the brief was hoping for.

The moment the process bends, the answer bends with it. And a biased answer isn't defensible. It's just a faster route to a finding nobody can rely on.

Protecting focus is what makes the delivery worth having.

Industry knows what worked before. Academia asks what could work next.

That's the difference in one line, and it's what makes the two so useful to each other.

Industry runs on precedent. Patterns that held up. Approaches that delivered. The knowledge lives in people who've done it, and it's genuinely valuable. But precedent has a ceiling. It can only teach you what's already been tried.

Academia sits on the other side of that ceiling. It's set up to ask the questions industry doesn't have the time or the mandate to ask. What if the assumption is wrong. What if the method could be improved. What if there's a better way that nobody has tested yet.

Neither side gets there alone. But the space between "what worked" and "what could work next" is where the real progress tends to sit.
