💙 SOMEWHERE BETWEEN THE SHIFT & THE CHAOS… WE BECAME FAMILY 🚑✨

CHOP isn’t only about the hours, the uniforms, the medical bags or the experience.

Sometimes it looks like three students huddled around a phone, a compulsory Starbucks mission ☕, questionable dance moves 😂, random photos, endless laughter and somehow still being ready when duty calls. 🚑

These are the moments we love most.

Because somewhere along the way, a group of students from different walks of life became a little community of their own. 🫶🏼

They learn together.
They serve together.
They get tired together.
They laugh A LOT together. 😂
And they create memories that will probably last much longer than the programme itself.

There’s a time to be professional. 🩺
There’s a time to work. 🚑
And there’s definitely a time to make a heart over your head for absolutely no reason. 🫶🏼😂

This is CHOP.

A little medicine.
A little chaos.
A whole lot of community. 💙

💗🏃‍♀️ WOMEN SUPPORTING WOMEN | CHOP™ IN ACTION 🏃‍♀️💗

There is something incredibly powerful about seeing young women step forward, serve their community and gain real-world exposure alongside the professionals already working in the field. ✨

Tonight, members of our Community Hours & Outreach Programme™ (CHOP™) Student group are volunteering alongside our service provider, Paramedics On Call Emergency Medical Services, at The Rooftop Shift – Women’s Night Shift Volume 2, hosted at The Capital Menlyn Maine in Pretoria. 🌃🚑

The women-only 5 km night run and walk brings women together for an evening centred around movement, community, confidence and empowerment — while giving our aspiring healthcare professionals another opportunity to experience the operational side of healthcare outside of the classroom.

For our CHOP™ students, opportunities such as these are about far more than accumulating community hours.

They are about showing up.
Learning from professionals.
Understanding teamwork and responsibility.
Experiencing event medicine and emergency preparedness in a real-world environment.
And developing the confidence to become the healthcare professionals they aspire to be. 🩺✨

We are particularly proud to see our CHOP Students representing the programme tonight with professionalism, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.

As young women preparing for futures in healthcare, there could hardly be a more fitting environment in which to do it: surrounded by women showing up for themselves, supporting one another and proving just how powerful a community of women can be. 💗

A sincere thank you to Paramedics On Call EMS for continuing to provide our students with supervised exposure to the realities of pre-hospital and event medical environments, and to the organisers and The Capital Menlyn Maine for hosting such an incredible evening.

To every woman running, walking, working, volunteering and cheering tonight:

🩺✨ FROM FUTURE DOCTORS… TO MEDICAL STUDENTS.

Some posts just mean a little more. This is one of them. ❤️

A few years ago, Elmien and Ciana joined us as aspiring young doctors on our 4-Day For Future Doctors Programme — curious, ambitious and already determined to turn a dream of medicine into something real.

Their journey didn’t end after four days.

They returned as CHOP students, committing themselves to a year of community outreach, medical exposure, training, courses, long days, challenges, friendships and experiences that stretched far beyond the classroom. From serving communities to travelling with us to Cape Town, they continued showing up, learning and growing.

And in 2026, they came back once again — this time not simply as students, but as members of our CHOP Student Representative Council, helping lead and support the next group coming through the programme. 🫶🏼

Today, we get to celebrate the reason they started this journey in the first place:

Two future doctors officially taking their next enormous step. 🩺❤️

We know that behind these acceptance letters are years of hard work — high school, academics, CHOP commitments, courses, submissions, early mornings, long days and everything life threw at them in between.

And somehow, through all of it, they kept going.

A personal note from Roelf:
Watching you grow from young students attending For Future Doctors into the people you are today has been an incredible privilege. I have challenged you, taught you, laughed with you, travelled with you and watched you develop over the years — and seeing “accepted for medicine” next to your names makes every long programme day worth it.

You earned this.

Next year, you don’t walk into university wondering whether medicine is your dream anymore.

You walk in as medical students. 🥹🩺

🤍📸 CHOP | Work Hard. Vibe Harder. 🩺😂

Who said community outreach has to be serious all the time? 👀😂

Yes, we work.
Yes, we see patients.
Yes, we learn.
Yes, there are responsibilities.

But somewhere between all of that… we also vibe. 😂🤍

☕ Coffee and food breaks
📸 Random selfies
😂 Questionable poses
🏟️ Casual detours past FNB Stadium
🫶 Catch-ups between patients
🚶‍♀️ Wandering off for the perfect photo
🤦‍♂️ And moments that have absolutely nothing to do with medicine.

Because CHOP is also about spending time together, getting to know each other outside the programme and actually enjoying the journey.

Some days we’re taking histories, doing screenings and working with communities…

Other moments we’re standing outside FNB Stadium making hearts with our arms. 😂

Balance. ✨

Good people. Good food. Good laughs. Meaningful work.
And a camera roll that gets increasingly less professional as the day goes on. 📸😂

The work matters. But so do the people you get to do it with. 🤍

Different professions. Different organisations. One community. One purpose. ❤️

Today’s Gauteng Outreach Screening Programme, hosted by the Islamic Medical Association of South Africa (IMASA) in Riverlea, brought together healthcare professionals, students, volunteers and community organisations for a morning of accessible preventative healthcare.

Community members moved through a comprehensive screening process, with services including:
🩺 Basic medical screening & vital signs
🩸 Glucose & cholesterol screening
⚖️ Weight, height & BMI assessment
👨‍⚕️ Final healthcare practitioner assessment
👁️ Optometry
🦷 Dentistry
👂 Audiology
🦶 Podiatry
🗣️ Speech Therapy
🦴 Physiotherapy & Chiropractic
🏃 Biokinetics
🤲 Occupational Therapy
🎗️ HIV testing & counselling
🌿 Acupuncture & cupping
❤️ CPR demonstrations

What makes days like this special is not simply the number of services available — it is seeing multidisciplinary healthcare working together in one space.

Doctors, nurses, allied healthcare professionals, organisations, volunteers and students each contributed their skills and time to help identify health risks, provide education and guide community members towards appropriate further care where needed.

A massive thank you to IMASA, every participating healthcare professional, specialist, organisation, volunteer and community partner who made today’s screening possible. 🤝

Preventative healthcare starts with access — and access starts with people willing to serve. ❤️

This is where the classroom meets the community.

Today, our CHOP™ 2026 students joined the Islamic Medical Association of South Africa (IMASA) for their Gauteng Outreach Screening Programme in Riverlea, Johannesburg.

Working under the supervision and guidance of healthcare professionals, our students assisted with basic health screenings including:
🩺 Blood pressure
❤️ Heart rate
🫁 Oxygen saturation
⚖️ Weight, height & BMI
📝 Patient documentation & screening forms
👥 Patient interaction and flow

But outreach is about much more than taking vital signs.

It’s learning how to communicate with patients, recognise concerning findings, document accurately, work within a multidisciplinary team and understand that there is a person behind every set of numbers. ❤️

These experiences give our aspiring healthcare professionals valuable exposure to real-world community medicine while developing confidence, professionalism and compassion.

A massive thank you to IMASA, the healthcare professionals, coordinators and volunteers who continue to create opportunities where learning and community service come together. 🤝

Listen. Measure. Observe. Understand what the body is telling you. ❤️

Our Alberton future doctors stepped into Cardio Day — getting hands-on with some of the fundamental observations and assessments used to understand a patient’s cardiovascular and respiratory status. 🩺📈

Working in pairs, students practised on one another and explored the fundamentals of:
🩸 Blood pressure measurement & understanding systolic and diastolic readings
🫀 Pulse assessment — rate, rhythm and what we can learn from it
🩺 Heart sounds and the basics of cardiac auscultation
🫁 Lung sounds and correct stethoscope placement
🩹 Pulse oximetry and understanding oxygen saturation
📈 ECG basics and how the heart’s electrical activity can be recorded
🧠 Bringing individual observations together to build a bigger clinical picture

Because taking a blood pressure or placing a pulse oximeter is the easy part — understanding what those numbers mean is where clinical thinking begins. 👀🧠

And then came the stethoscopes… suddenly everyone wanted to know what everyone else’s heart sounded like. 😂🩺❤️

That’s the beauty of hands-on medical education — students don’t simply read about the cardiovascular system in a textbook. They feel the pulse, hear the heart, measure the pressure, watch the monitor and connect the theory to a real person. 🌱

From finding that first pulse to hearing lub-dub through a stethoscope and exploring an ECG tracing, our Alberton group brought plenty of curiosity, concentration and teamwork to Cardio Day.

Today, learning to recognise the signs. Tomorrow, learning what to do with them. 🤍🫀

Stop the bleed. Save a life. 🩸

Our Alberton future doctors got hands-on with Control Bleeding — learning that when severe bleeding occurs, knowing what to do and acting quickly can make all the difference. 🧤🚑

Using our simulated bleeding limbs, artificial blood and medical equipment, students practised the fundamentals of:
🩸 Recognising significant bleeding
✋ Applying effective direct pressure
🩹 Wound packing & pressure dressings
🔵 Tourniquet application
🧤 Safe handling & infection prevention
🧠 Understanding the importance of rapid bleeding control
🤝 Working together when every second counts

And yes… things got very messy. 😂🩸

But that’s exactly what simulation is for — practise, make mistakes, adjust, try again and build confidence in a safe learning environment. 🌱

From hesitant first attempts to confidently applying pressure, packing wounds and securing tourniquets, our Alberton group brought plenty of focus, teamwork and determination to the session.

Because when faced with major bleeding, the basics matter:
Find it. Pressure. Pack it. Stop it. 🩸

Before the procedure comes preparation.

Our Alberton future doctors stepped into the world of surgical preparation — learning how healthcare professionals prepare themselves and their environment before a procedure. 🏥

Through simulation, students practised:
🧼 Surgical scrubbing & hand preparation
🥼 Correct gowning technique
🧤 Sterile gloving
🟦 Maintaining a sterile field
🩹 POP application & orthopaedic immobilisation

From scrubbing in to working together on simulated injuries, the focus was simple: clean technique, careful preparation and teamwork.

And yes… getting into a sterile gown without touching anything suddenly becomes a lot harder than it looks. 😂🥼

Scrubbed. Gowned. Gloved. Ready to learn. 🩺💙

Our Alberton future doctors explored The Eye & Vision while putting another essential healthcare skill into practice — teamwork. 👀🧠

Working together, students practised the fundamentals of:
🔦 Basic eye examination with a penlight
👁️ Pupil assessment & response to light
🧠 Understanding PEARL — Pupils Equal And Reactive to Light
🗣️ Clear communication & active listening
🤝 Teamwork, cooperation & shared responsibility

Because medicine isn’t only about what you know — it’s about how well you observe, communicate and work with others.

And yes… giving students penlights means everyone suddenly wants to check everyone’s pupils. 😂🔦

That’s the beauty of practical learning — learn it, practise it, discuss it and build confidence together. 🌱
