In my opinion, there's a correlation between EQ and IQ and that correlation is very important for success.
Having to have been in the HR game for over 12 years,I have learnt that when we talk about job-fit we refer to this equation.
Assessments ,job descriptions and interview guides are tools in the workplace that are designed to establish and predict job success prior making an appointment.Hence in the design of these tools there's always a measure of technical competencies together with behavioral competencies to mitigate around job-misfits.
If you have IQ and lack EQ there's minimal chances of being successful in one's role. I'm sure we have worked with colleagues/ being lead by these type of Managers in our careers, and HR's role is to always extinguish fires between co-workers/ subordinates because of the behaviour of these employees. Even if you are a Specialists, you also do make interactions with co-workers so it doesn't exempt you.
By the way, this lack of EQ not just affects people around you at work but it also affects the social, that's how broad it is- it impedes on relationships.
If you are Employee/Manager that I've made reference to: You are technically sound but lack EQ, harness your EQ and make interactions with everyone around you pleasant.
Remember one spends 90% of their time at work and the workplace needs to be a pleasant place for one to perform optimally rather than it being toxic.
Here are tips on how to improve on yourself:
1. Understand what EQ is ?
2. Understand the skill of self- management and awareness.
Benefits:
1. It will minimize absenteeism.
2. It will build team cohesion
3. Improvement on team performance
4. Give you a better chance for promotion....and many more( read up on it).
Remember EQ can always be harnessed and improved, it's not a dead end Mate.
Happy Thursday.
