🌱 Small holes in your lawn could point to a bigger problem underground!

Greenline Pest Control recently treated a severe mole cricket infestation in Olympus, Pretoria East.

Mole crickets tunnel beneath the lawn, disturbing roots and contributing to thinning grass and dying patches. Visible tunnel openings and raised soil tracks can be warning signs—but brown patches alone do not confirm an infestation.

🔎 What did we find at this property?

Our team located active tunnel openings and used a pressure pump to direct treatment into them. We saw treatment emerging from other connected openings and live mole crickets being flushed to the surface, showing that the application was moving through the tunnels we targeted.

🌱 SMALL HOLES IN YOUR LAWN? HERE’S WHAT TO LOOK FOR.

This video from a client’s property in Centurion shows harvester termites emerging through a hole in the ground. These openings give workers access to the surface to collect grass and carry it back underground.

🕒 WHEN ARE THEY MOST ACTIVE?
Harvester termites can forage in different seasons. They are often easier to spot during the daytime in the dry winter months, while summer activity commonly shifts to the evening and night. Temperature and weather influence when they emerge.

🔎 WHAT SHOULD YOU LOOK FOR?
• Small holes in the soil with termites moving in and out.
• Workers carrying short pieces of grass.
• Grass that appears clipped or harvested.
• Thinning lawn or expanding bare patches alongside visible termite activity.

🌿 WHAT DAMAGE CAN THEY CAUSE?
Harvester termites mainly feed on grass. Heavy activity can strip sections of lawn, leaving it thin and patchy, especially when the grass is already struggling with dry conditions.

Bare patches alone do not confirm termites—watch for insects actively cutting and carrying grass.

🐜 HARVESTER TERMITES FOUND DURING AN ANT TREATMENT IN ECO PARK

While completing an ant treatment for a returning client in Eco Park, Centurion, we noticed several tiny openings partly covered with soil. They were easy to miss, but closer inspection confirmed harvester termite activity beneath the lawn.

We showed the client what we had found, explained the problem and treated the connected underground tunnel system. In the video, you can see the insecticide solution travelling through the tunnels and emerging from another opening.

Harvester termites can gradually remove grass and create expanding bare patches. Treating the colony early can help prevent further lawn damage.

Look out for:

✅ Small openings surrounded by loose soil
✅ Termites carrying pieces of grass
✅ Circular or expanding bare patches
✅ Grass cut off close to the soil
