*Dear Matriculants*
‼️ *Did you know that [You can fail the whole year and still pass your FINAL] ??*
The purpose of SBA (School-Based Assessment) and Final Examination is to work together to determine a learner's overall mark in each subject. It is important for learners to understand how these two components are weighted and how they can still succeed, even if they struggle throughout the year.
🔹 *Breakdown of SBA and Final Weighting:*
For Grades 12, the final mark is a combination of:
▪️ *SBA (25%)* : The SBA is made up of continuous assessments throughout the year. This includes tests, assignments, projects, practical tasks (where applicable), and oral presentations.
▪️ *Final Examination (75%)* : This is the end-of-year exam that is written in November.
The *SBA* ensures that learners are evaluated not just on their final exam performance but on their efforts and progress throughout the year. This offers learners multiple opportunities to improve their marks.
🔹 *Example Calculation:*
Let’s consider an example where a Grade 12 learner has the following results:
SBA: 50% for the year.
Final Exam: 70%.
To calculate the final mark:
SBA Contribution: 50% of 25 = 12.5%.
Exam Contribution: 70% of 75 = 52.5%.
So, the final mark will be: 12.5% + 52.5% = 65%.
*🔹Motivation* :
Even if a learner struggles and doesn’t perform well during the first three terms, they should not feel discouraged! The final exam is worth *75%* of their total mark, meaning that a strong performance in the final exam can significantly boost their overall result.
Example of Overcoming Challenges:_
Imagine a learner who didn’t perform well in the first three terms, scoring an average of 40% for their SBA. But, if they work hard and score 80% in the final exam, their final mark would be calculated as follows:
SBA Contribution: 40% of 25 = 10%.
Exam Contribution: 80% of 75 = 60%.
In this case, the learner’s final mark would be: 10% + 60% = 70%.
This shows that by focusing on studying for the final exam, learners can still pass the subject, even if their SBA mark isn’t as high as they wanted.
*🔹Key Takeaways:*
▪️ *Don’t Give Up: Your final mark is largely influenced by the final exam. Keep pushing, as your efforts at the end of the year can make a huge difference.*
▪️ *Consistent Effort Matters* : Although the final exam is important, the SBA is an opportunity to build a strong foundation. Doing well in tests, assignments, and projects can help boost your mark early on.
▪️ *Seek Help and Stay Focused* : If you find certain topics challenging, don't hesitate to ask for help from your teachers, friends, or study groups. Focused effort and determination will pay off!
