Embossing and debossing look simple when you see the finished pack.

But the effect comes from physically changing the board.

Embossing raises the detail.
Debossing presses it in.

That means the artwork, board, tooling and pressure all need to work together.

Too much detail can lose definition.
Too much pressure can distort the board.
And the wrong stock can completely change the result.

So this isn’t just a design decision.

It’s a production decision too.

You can specify the colour correctly and still get a different result in print.

That’s because the colour in the file is only part of the story.

The stock matters.
The coating matters.
How much ink the material absorbs matters.

The same red can look richer on coated board, softer on uncoated stock, and different again once a surface finish is added.

So if colour really matters, don’t only check the colour reference.

Check it on the material it’s actually going to be printed on.

The same Pantone colour can look different depending on the stock it is printed on.

That is where coated vs uncoated matters.

On coated stock, ink tends to sit closer to the surface, so colour usually looks sharper and more saturated.

On uncoated stock, more ink is absorbed into the fibres, which can make the same colour look softer or slightly duller.

Nothing is necessarily wrong with the print.

The material is changing the result.

That is also why your screen can only tell you so much.

CMYK and Pantone can both produce great colour.

They just get there in very different ways.

CMYK builds colour from four process inks.
Pantone uses a specifically mixed spot colour.

That difference affects more than the look.

It can affect colour tolerance, consistency, proofing, cost and the way the job is produced.

And if a Pantone colour is converted to CMYK, the result may not match exactly - especially with brighter oranges, greens and blues.

So the real question is not:

A lot of packaging problems get blamed on the design.

But often, the design is not the problem at all.

The issue starts earlier - with the dieline.

If the structure is set up incorrectly, artwork can end up crossing folds badly, sitting too close to cut areas, landing on the wrong panel or shifting once the carton is assembled.

And by the time that shows up in production, the fix is usually more expensive than it needed to be.

A dieline is not a design file.

It is the structure the design has to work around.

It tells production where the carton will be cut, creased, folded, glued and assembled.

If artwork is treated as though the dieline is just a page boundary, problems start quickly.

Graphics can cross folds badly.
Important elements can land on flaps.
Panels can end up misaligned.
And prepress has to fix something that should have been right from the start.

That is also why physical structure checks, like PFI blade proofs, can be useful before committing to full production.
