What is the UIF? It is a fund established in terms of Unemployment Insurance Fund Act 63 of 2001.The UIF offers short-term financial assistance to employees who are registered with the UIF, contribute monthly to it, and become unemployed or who cannot work due to illness, maternity leave or adoption leave. The UIF assists dependents of a deceased employee who were registered and who contributed to the UIF. Who CAN claim:

1.You must be in possession of a bar coded ID book or valid S.A. As of 2010, you can claim UIF, even if you are not a S.A. citizen, on the following conditions:
You must have contributed to UIF and you must have a legal work permit. (Unfortunately, these applications take longer to approve)
3. If you DO NOT receive your full salary while on maternity leave, you can claim UIF from the Department of Labour, if you pay UIF every month.
4. Business owners can claim if you are a member of a Close Corporation or the Director of a company - (Pty) Ltd.
5. You can claim maternity benefits, even if you already claimed maternity benefits in the last 4 years.
6. Mothers who miscarry in the third trimester or have a stillborn baby, can claim for 6 weeks.
7. Maternity benefits can be claimed (you must be at least 8 weeks pregnant) if you resign from your work while you are pregnant or when you go on maternity leave – (for up to 4 months)

1. If UIF contribution is not deducted from your salary every month – this information should reflect on your payslip.
2.If you are the Sole Proprietor (your own business).
3.If you receive your full salary while on maternity leave, you CAN NOT claim maternity benefits.
