Starting a business can be a bit like getting married: when you decide to take the plunge, your heart may rule your head and you have big dreams of how it is going to be the best thing ever.
Like with a marriage, none of us start out with an exit strategy front of mind.
But as they say, life is what happens when you are making other plans and for some of us, experiencing this in our businesses can be every bit as devastating as a divorce.

What piece of advice do you most wish someone had given you when you started your business?

The inimitable Winston Churchill once said that ‘...if you fail to plan, you are planning to fail...’. For some of us flying by the seat of our pants works, at least in our private lives. However, this is seldom true in business. That is, after all, why any bank or venture capitalist will insist on the presentation of a careful, detailed business plan before they will consider a request for business finance.
And sometimes, when you have been in business for a few years, you need to revisit your original plan and see if it is still valid. Have you met your milestones? If you have not, do some soul-searching to be sure why not: Did the plan fail or did you just fail to fully implement the plan? Can you improve productivity or profitability by going back to the plan, or do you need to completely re-design?
Long before we get to the mechanics of how you will do business, the simplest but perhaps most important bit of planning revolves around your vision & mission statements. These help to crystalize your thoughts about why you think you should be in business and what (and how) it is you expect that your business will be doing.
No matter how long you have been in operation; if you do not have a clear, formally documented vision & mission, there is value in going through the exercise now.
Here is a useful document to help with this planning.

It is indisputable that 2020 has changed the face of business dramatically and quite possibly forever. Based on figures out of the US, where online retailers reported growth in Black Friday sales last week in excess of 20% over the previous year, it is clear that any business which can move part or all of its sales online has a better chance of riding out the current economic challenges than those who do not.
The question is no longer simply whether you have a website. In the past many companies have been happy for their website to be little more than a glorified business listing, but this is just not good enough anymore. The world and our needs have changed.Your website needs to take orders. It needs to engage with lukewarm prospects and turn them into white-hot leads. It needs to make a definitive contribution to your customer service culture and process.
Let’s assume you know all of this. Let’s further assume you invested a significant amount of money in achieving just that. But somehow the ‘build it and they will come’ mantra has not worked. Your web developer tells you, you have the Rolls Royce of websites, but you have not seen any real benefit…what now?
Having been in that situation, I would urge any and all owners of websites (even those who are perfectly up to date with all the technical aspects of what makes a website effective) to do an independent website audit. There are many options for website audits in the marketplace. Some free, some paid. Many of them are just so-so for effectiveness, especially if they are free, but there are a couple of really, really good ones.
My recommendation is for Neil Patel’s “Ubersuggest”.

I promise you: I get nothing if you use this product, I am basing this recommendation only on how impressed I have been when I have used it myself. There is a free portion, but the really valuable audit is available for $120 for a lifetime subscription and once you have run the audit once, Ubersuggest will periodically test your site again and make recommendations on how to improve your traffic.
Only when you have this information, can you meaningfully engage with your web developer to ensure the website you have delivers the results you need. Trust me, you will thank me later.
As always, we aim to deliver value beyond simple website design.

How often have you heard someone say "I am just not a sales person". I know I have. I have also been guilty of saying it myself, about myself...
It took almost losing my business to learn the real truth: EVERYONE is a sales person.
Have you ever had to convince your teenager to tidy up her bedroom? That was a sales transaction.
Convince your ball & chain to spend Christmas at home rather than with her family? That was a sales transaction.
Convince your dog that doing his business outdoors was better than indoors? That was a sales transaction.

Everytime you persuade someone to do something you want them to do, that is in effect selling them on your point of view. Why would you not be able to apply the same principles to your products or services?
