April 2026 marks the 23rd year of PGS Heritage.

What began as a three-man-team at the turn of the millenium, has evolved into a powerhouse force of 28. With this incredible team, we have had the privilege of assisting and serving our clients on over 1500 projects across South Africa, Malawi, Tanzania, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique and The Kingdom of Lesotho, Mauritius, Zambia, and Burundi.

We have grown from a single premises home base, to now boasting a mitigation laboratory and offices in South Africa, as well as having offices in Portugal, The Kingdom of Lesotho, and Mozambique.

We are honoured to have played a role in heritage preservation across the world over these past decades, and look forward to all that is yet to come!

At PGS, we are incredibly cognisant of Foot-and-Mouth Disease currently ravaging the agricultural sector. Much of our work sees us interacting with farmers, their lands and livestock, and is for this reason we have implemented pre-emptive biosecurity measures with all of our field teams.

These measures will be conducted in conjunction and in addition to all protocols on the individual farms we move through.

We are committed to doing our part in ensuring the environments we engage with are kept safe, and to curb the spread of this outbreak.

We’re officially open for 2026!

We’re starting the year energised and excited about the work ahead!

Across our specialist units — Grave Relocation, Heritage Advisory, Heritage Sciences & Mitigation, and GIS & Remote Sensing — our teams are ready to collaborate and deliver thoughtful, practical solutions across the Archaeological, Heritage, and Environmental sectors.

The structural and leadership changes we introduced at the end of 2025 were intentional. Those foundations are now firmly in place, strengthening how we work and positioning PGS for meaningful growth.

If you’re planning projects or keen to reconnect, let’s start the conversation!

We have had the immense pleasure over the past few months of engaging with a handful of schools’ First Lego League Robotics teams on their projects under the theme of ‘Unearthed’. These incredible young innovators and inventors were tasked with identifying and developing solutions for everyday problems that we as archaeologists come across in the field.

Today these brilliant teams will be presenting their projects and inventions to the judging panels, and we wish them the very best of luck!

With the triumphant arrival of the first Spring rains in Pretoria, we thought of no better time than to celebrate a series of some of South Africa’s magnificent rain lore.

First up is Impundulu, the Lightning Bird. Often associated with the Hammerkop (Scopus umbretta), with its hammer-shaped head reminiscent of a lightning bolt.

Some say that the Impundulu is born from the heart of a storm, giving it, amongst other traits, the ability to summon and control thunder and lightning.

The Impundulu exists as a duality, some associating it with malevolence, and others viewing it as a powerful guardian.

This photo was taken by our CEO, Henk Steyn, luckily this was just an ordinary Hammerkop and not the fearsome Impundulu!
