A Rehabilitation Strategy and Implementation Programme (RSIP) is commonly required as a condition of a Water Use Licence (WUL) issued under the National Water Act, 1998 (Act No. 36 of 1998, as amended) (NWA).

It sets out the strategy and practical steps for progressive and final rehabilitation of sites that impact water resources (for example, mining, industrial, or waste facilities).

A typical action plan within the RSIP guides the holder of the WUL on annual rehabilitation activities that can reduce the final rehabilitation process. The RSIP is typically submitted together with an Integrated Water and Waste Management Plan (IWWMP) and must be updated periodically (often annually) for approval by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS). Importantly, no official guidelines currently exist for the required layout or detailed content of an RSIP. Practitioners therefore rely on best practice, site-specific conditions, and alignment with the WUL conditions and closure objectives.

Recycling in South Africa has become a major opportunity.

The disposal, storage, handling or recycling of waste is regulated through the National Environmental Management: Waste Act, 2008 (Act No. 59 of 2008, as amended) (NEM:WA).

Depending on the size, volume or type of waste that you plan on recycling, different Categories might be triggered. These Categories determine what type of application route must be followed to obtain a Waste Management License (WML) to legally recycle. For example, the recycling of general waste at a facility that has an operational area of more than 500m2 falls under Category A and would require an application for a WML following the Basic Assessment (BA) process.

At ENVASS, we are fully aware of the National Environmental Authorisation System (NEAS) recently introduced by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE).

This new national electronic platform is designed to streamline the submission and management of EA applications under the EIA Regulations. Any new EA applications submitted after the 1st of October will be submitted through the NEAS. As always, ENVASS remains proactive in tracking regulatory changes and system updates so that we can guide our clients with confidence and accuracy.

Our team of registered EAPs and specialists is already aligned with the NEAS requirements. We have the processes, knowledge, and experience in place to ensure a smooth transition for every application we handle.
