We ran the Winter Special's numbers against 4 years of Eskom's own tariff data.

Your electricity is already about 72% more expensive than in 2022, and that trend isn't reversing — Eskom's own debt and maintenance backlog see to that.

R99,500 buys a full 12kW solar and battery system, installed: Luxpower 12kW inverter, 3x Hina ESS Hi-5 batteries, 12x 620W panels, full install kit and cabling — supplied, installed and COC'd.

On an example Pretoria East home spending ~R3,500/month on Eskom, offsetting ~85% of that usage saves about R3,000/month. At today's tariff alone that's under 3 years. Add a conservative 10%/year future increase (below the last 4 years' average) and payback lands closer to 2 years 7 months.

After that, every tariff increase pays you instead of costing you — over 10 years, roughly R573,000 back against a R99,500 cost. Illustrative example, not a promise, but the direction is clear.

Your electricity bill is up about 72% since 2022. Not a feeling — actual Eskom tariff data.

9.6% (2022), 18.7% (2023), 12.7% (2024), 12.7% (2025), 8.76% (2026) — five increases, one direction, comfortably ahead of inflation.

It's not one villain: Eskom's own debt load, a maintenance backlog on ageing power stations, and municipalities that don't pay their Eskom accounts on time all get built into what NERSA approves each year. None of that is something one household can fix.

What it means for you: the geyser, the standby power, the old bulbs — none of that is new advice. What's new is that ignoring it now costs roughly 72% more than it did four years ago, and it keeps compounding.

The math on solar gets better every time Eskom's tariff does. The sooner it's properly installed and signed off, the sooner the increases stop being your problem alone.

Four days. Four stolen cables. One highway off-ramp.

Four MVK cables were stolen from 14 metres under the N1 at Garsfontein. Three Pretoria East suburbs — Ashlea Gardens, Alphen Park and Waterkloof Park — went dark for four straight days. Not a fault, not maintenance. Cable thieves working a tunnel most residents didn't know existed under their own off-ramp.

It's not a one-off either — City Power logged 652 cable theft and vandalism incidents in a single seven-month stretch across Gauteng. Roughly 1 in 5 outages now trace back to theft, not a fault anyone can predict or plan around.
