“The time I spent volunteering made me realise I really did have a passion for agriculture. I also learnt that farming, when done right, can be lucrative.”

Loyisa Manga IS THE OWNER OF EVOO AND South Africa produces some of the best Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)

South Africa produces some of the best Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) in the world and we want everyone to know about it.
Like wine, EVOO is influenced by cultivar, terroir, climate and the maker. It is a gift of nature that needs to be nurtured in the groves and through the processes of harvesting, extraction and storage. It is more than a commodity, it is a product of passion.
Why buy imported oil when our producers offer the best quality, freshest oil, and your purchase supports the local agricultural industry and creates employment. It's a win-win situation!

The country's raisin industry expects continued growth in 2021 with new

Despite a challenging year, South Africa’s raisin industry remained firmly open for business throughout, seeing good growth in exports to the UK during 2020.

Thompson was the most exported variety this year, followed by the Golden Sultana and Flame raisin. The UK continues to be the second biggest importer of South African raisins after Germany.

The South African Raisins industry has this year launched a new strategic initiative named Project GAPP. The focus of the initiative is to ensure that best practices are formalised to grow and dry premium quality fruit.

Nut markets take a tumble

While macadamias rode out the storm last year, 2021 is likely to see a price decrease in US dollar terms for the first time in years.

Alex Whyte, sales and marketing manager at Green and Gold Macadamias, said the reduced demand from the tourism, convenience and restaurant sectors had resulted in a build-up of stock in the ingredient grades of nuts.

“This will result in a reasonable price drop in US dollar terms. The rate of consumption will also have an impact on prices, considering that we could be entering a global recession. However, in the past macadamias have actually done well in recessions as they are an affordable luxury.”

Harnessing agricultural innovation to boost Africa's prosperity
By Dr Thulasizwe Mkhabela

South Africa has made significant strides in this regard in the last two and half decades.

Nevertheless, the World Bank in 2017 estimated that approximately 800 million people continue to live in extreme poverty.

This is further compounded by the fact that regional progress has been uneven, with Sub-Saharan Africa accounting for half of the world's extreme poor. Therefore, much remains to be done in terms of international efforts to reach the target for 2030 of eradicating extreme poverty as articulated under Sustainable Development Goal 1 (SDG 1).

It should also be borne in mind that for an individual country, such as South Africa in this case, to prosper while its neighbours continue to languish in poverty and other economic ills, is only of little value. In fact, such a development pathway has deleterious unintended consequences of attracting inordinate emigration as people from other countries, far and near, search for a better life.
