Midas Protocol #13 “Ask for help”

Some sales managers believe that they have to be invincible and never admit to uncertainty. The majority of SM’s appear to think that the role expects them to have answers for everything their market, their team or their superiors may challenge them with.

This is nonsense! Nobody is all-knowing or perfectly experienced for your situation.
There is however no doubt that all sales managers live under constant scrutiny from both their management, their subordinates and the other middle managers of an organisation.
If you go it alone by not finding a wise coach or mentor to use as a sounding board, the pressure will eventually break you.
This would be sad and unnecessary.
Seeking help or guidance may be a new skill initially, but may turn into the most valuable advice you pass onto either your successor or someone you are coaching.

Midas Protocol #12 “Manage your time”

Everybody I’ve ever consulted to appears to have a problem with finding enough time to perform their tasks!
I’ve come to realise that Salespeople and Sales Managers are notorious for being swamped with work and forcing themselves to work more hours to simply get through their job!

It cannot be denied that the sales function, whether it is management thereof or performing it yourself, demands additional time that most other jobs get done in the eight-to-five timeslot. Yet, salespeople somehow feel compelled to prove that they have worked long and hard for the reward that they get and either defend or rationalise their long hours with passion!
Despite their industriousness, they seem to run out of time before the job is done. The ‘job’ being achieving target or overperformance.
Time management is very simple and delivers many hours, days and weeks for pursuing your personal pleasures without feeling guilty or appearing stressed.
It requires discipline, and it starts with priorities!

Midas Protocol #11 “Develop good productivity tools”

Up till about 15 years ago Customer Relationship Management (CRM) was offered as the ‘silver bullet’ that would allow you to build fantastic relationships with your customers and increase your share of their wallets significantly!
If CRM had been used purposefully and managed effectively it certainly had the potential to deliver on some of its promises. The subsequent failure of most CRM systems was almost as spectacular as how the ‘Y2K’ issue became a non-event! The biggest mistake by CRM adopters was the belief that a software system could perform activities!
We now know better… Good productivity tools will make a difference in your results, provided they are designed and created or ‘bought’ by salespeople and driven by the Sales Managers.
They don’t need to be expensive or sophisticated or linked to other ERP systems in your organisation.
They DO have to be simple, accessible, easy to change, and visible through a dashboard!

Midas Protocol #10 “Manage the Web”

To manage the internet and social media is an impossible task!

Yes, you do have some control over what you read or what you post but beyond that your ability to influence diminishes rapidly. At the same time, the Internet and social media as communication mediums have a massive impact on what people see and hear and how they form opinions based on this information, be it true or false.
Over the past 5 years the growth of users on all internet platforms has been phenomenal, and even more so since Covid forced work-from-home adjustments.
You need to understand and harness the power of the web to complement your teams’ face-to-face sales efforts.

Simply doing ‘Search Engine Optimisation’ and ‘adwords’ for your website isn’t enough, nor is regular postings of new products on Facebook and LinkedIn. You require research, focus, budget and resources to make it work for you, your team and your company.

Midas Protocol #9 “Inspire”

The Job Title suggests that Sales Managers spends their time managing.
The truth is that a Sales Manager needs to add a large dose of leadership into their function to become really effective.
This is where your ability to inspire becomes key. You need to motivate the team members individually to achieve their best but you need to be inspirational if you want the motivation to be effective and to last longer.
Words have a role to play in your ability to inspire, but actions speak significantly louder! Know more, plan further, start earlier, implement promises, have consequences, and above all, remain human! Remember, management is about the task, leadership is about people.
