Biodiversity enhancement of reconstructed pans at Mafube Coal

In 2025, PPR Technologies cc and EkoInfo cc implemented a large-scale biodiversity enhancement programme at the reconstructed pans at Mafube Coal (Springboklaagte, Mpumalanga), covering ±80 ha.
The project applied a nucleation (restoration island) approach. Between September and November 2025, the following was achieved at Mafube Coal’s reconstructed pans:
• Seedbank transfer:
157 evenly distributed plots reintroduced indigenous plant propagules and soil microbial communities, with early germination already observed.
• Restoration islands:
3 862 indigenous plants were established across 18 165 m², strategically placed to enhance habitat complexity and faunal refuge.
• Grassland establishment:
80 ha seeded using a combination of drone and hand seeding to stabilise soils and reduce erosion. And indigenous Highveld grassland mix were used.

This integrated strategy was designed to accelerate ecological succession, restore soil function, and re-establish biodiversity toward pre-mining conditions. Early vegetation response confirms that succession processes have successfully been initiated.
