On Saturday 24 Jan in Pretoria one of SA's prettiest little snakes was relocated from inside a home and under a washing machine on the border of Faerie Glen Nature Reserve near the northern slope. These harmless little Spotted Bush Snakes (Philothamnus semivariegatus) are gecko eating experts, active during the day, extremely quick and shy. They also have a bright blue tongue. Often killed by people or zapped by electric fenses. They arw pretty common and should be a welcomed and appreciated visitor into the garden.

I had just locked up the house .Showered and then got ready for 21 day lock down when my phone rang. The caller was very afraid and his wife had seen a brown snake in the kitchen. They lost sight and thought the snake was somewhere in the kitchen or through the door in the garage. I told him it sounds like a House Snake and they can call if they see it again. He begged me to come and I reluctantly went. I checked under fridge and then as I looked under the washing machine I spotted something us (snake guys) learn to recognize immediately, even on a small section of snake .The black coloration between the brown individual scales which can only mean Mozambique Spitter. In fact the biggest I've ever caught . Had to run to the car to get my goggles 🤦🏻‍♂ and after a shower of venom and not to much trouble it climbed into my tube. I managed no photos or Vids as the family refused to come down stairs and remembering the advise from Arno and Heidi from regarding being extra careful during this time I skipped any hero shots and my phone died anyway. I pulled over next to the Moloto road and released the beauty into the Moreletta. I feel really good that the family are not locking down with that snake for the next 3 weeks . Now I'm taking my second shower and having a bells. Happy lock down guys and be safe.
. Thank you for this pic .

Today we received a call regarding a large snake ( Black Mamba ) that had been chased from one property onto another and ended up hiding in a garage . Both properties bordering Rietvlei Nature Reserve. The lovely lady pulled up a camping chair and proceeded to watch the garage like a hawk while in her words "working on her tan " We took longer than usual to respond as we were not in the area and she must have waited over an hour for us . We unpacked the garage from centre to the side that it was seen going towards. Under the last few tiles we found the stunning Rinkhals (Hemachatus haemachatus) over 1m long .It came out spitting and then proceded to perform Thanotosis (playing dead ). The snake was secured and relocated back to the reserve to take up its important place in the ecosystem.

Rhombic egg eater
Scientific name: Dasypeltis scabra
Montana Park ,Pretoria .
Amazing little harmless snakes.
A kind lady phoned a local snake catcher for assistance, he then placed her details on our what's app group. I was really close by so responded immediately . When I phoned the lady she was positive the snake was an egg eater, but sadly her cat had got hold of the little snake. She had learned to ID local snakes from face book pages and TV. She was convinced the snake was badly injured . On arrival the snake was not performing the usual defence behaviour but looked rather close to death. I picked it up and realised it had no visible injuries. Luckily the cat hadn't scratched or bitten the snake but only played with it for enough time to absolutely exhaust the little guy and he seemed to be playing dead rather than the usual loud egg eater hissing (by rubbing its keeled scales together ) and spinning . While I was giving the staff and lady some advise on future encounters the snake made a miraculous recovery and regained its strength. By the time I got it home for a better examination, he was back to normal and looking good. He will be given a night to rest and will be released back in the foothills of the mountain from where he came. Lets call him Lucky. Remember if you come across a snake in your house keep a safe distance keep your eye on the snake and call one of the many enthusiasts who would be happy to assist. Often they are harmless and actually lovely to have around the garden.

A relatively small highly venomous Mozambique Spitting Cobra (Naja Mossambica) removed a stone's throw away from the Snouted Cobra I posted earlier today.

Personally, these are one of my favourite snakes, but they generally have a reputation for having a bad temperament. I find that working calmly, slowly, and gently with these guys does wonders.

That being said, don't ever try to handle one without training. They're also able to spit their venom very accurately.

This was one of the hairiest removals I've ever had. I'm generally extremely calm, but I was shaking like a leaf after this one.
It was at night, in a difficult to reach place, with a bunch of people and dogs running around (despite my requests to keep away).
The guy who was holding a torch for me ran as soon as the snake got going. So I had a torch in my mouth and a massive snake that just would not go into the tube. He was long and heavy and lunged many times, and I came fairly close to getting tagged.
It was a sobering reminder that no matter how comfortable you are around snakes, you need to stay on top of your s**t.

We measured him and he came in at just over 1.8m.

Please feel free to contact me for any removals in the Pretoria Area

Had a traumatic experience last night. I'm sorry for the graphic image, but let it serve as a warning : please look where you're driving. Snakes often cross the road, especially at night. This one had to be euthanized.

Thank you to the gentleman who cared enough to stop his car in the middle of the road on a Friday evening and call me to end the animal's suffering.

Harmless Brown House Snake (Boaedon capensis) measuring a nice 90cm.
