SAPS Warns Public Against Facebook Marketplace Scams in Winterveld and Surrounding Areas

* Rising Crime: The South African Police Service (SAPS) reports an increase in robberies and murders linked to false bargains on Facebook Marketplace.

* Targeted Areas: Criminal syndicates are active in Winterveld, Loate, Mabopane, Soshanguve, and have even reached victims in the Free State and Mpumalanga.

* Common Tactics: Scammers frequently advertise items like a silver VW Polo and a trailer, lure buyers to secluded locations or abandoned houses under false pretenses, and then ambush, rob, or kidnap them.

* Police Action & Warning: SAPS advises citizens to remain vigilant, visit a police station before entering unfamiliar areas for online transactions, and report suspicious ads. Over 187 suspects have been arrested and more than 40 illegal fi****ms recovered.

Scenario
A business robbery had occurred in the midrand area at an electronics company whereby 15 million rand worth of stock was stolen late last year in November .

The team managed to locate some of the stock that was stolen , a residential address was identified in the laudium area whereby the stock was been stored .

An operational plan was executed and the house was entered and cleared . Upon inspection stock was found to be stockpiled in the house as well as in all the bedrooms

All role players were summoned to scene and the scene was processed by LCRC with all exhibits handed back to the lawful owner via sap299

Two suspects that were found in the house had alibis for been in possession of the stock as they bought it on an online auction.

SUCCESS REPORT: THEFT OUT OF MOTOR VEHICLE INTERCEPTION

• Incident Report:
- On 12 August 2026, information was received regarding a grey Volkswagen T-Roc allegedly involved in theft out of motor vehicle incidents. The theft out of motor vehicle incident occurred earlier that morning at filling station in Pretoria North.
- Proshield Security members proceeded to search for the vehicle and subsequently located it on Eskia Mphahlele Drive, Mayville. The vehicle was followed until it entered the Engen filling station at Mayville Mall, where a stop was effected.
- Three male suspects were found inside the vehicle. Upon inspection, a brown leather bag containing suspected stolen property was recovered. The bag contained personal belongings belonging to a female victim, including a laptop and important study documents.
- The vehicle was found displaying false registration number # # # # # , which had been double-sided taped over the vehicle's original registration number # # # # # .
- Further items recovered from the vehicle included vehicle jamming equipment, suspected stolen property and suspected counterfeit/fake money bills.
- The suspects, vehicle and recovered items were handed over to SAPS for further investigation and processing. The handover was completed without any damage to the vehicle or injuries to any of the suspects or security personnel.

◼️ *REPORT:

Abovementioned members recieved information about an active armed robbery as BP lavender rd pta.

Back up was requested by SAPS on scene that suspect is exchanging gun fire with saps members at the garage.

Members immediately responded and on route to the said incident members spotted one of the suspect vehicles and high speed chase ensued. Suspect was shooting from the vehicle and security returned fire, the VW polo made a accident on R566 towards rosslyn where one suspect was detained and 3 others jumped from the vehicle and evaded arrest.

The detained suspect provided information to members on the ground of where the safehouse is located. Above mentioned members immediately put together a plan and proceeded to the safehouse. Upon arrival members was met with heavy gun fire by multiple suspects using ri**es and pistols.

Members breached the property and detained a additional 3 suspects with 2 vehicles used in the commission of the crime. Both the drop safe and ATM device was found inside the house undamaged and uncut. A R5 r***e with am******on and extra magize was also found on the property. No injuries was reported and all members accounted for.

All necessary role players attended the scene. All vehicles and goods were processed by lcrc and taken to their designated VCIU and SAP13 sections.
