As a South African employer, every payslip you process involves 5 statutory deductions. Miss one — or calculate it wrong — and you're looking at SARS penalties, interest, and potentially a CCMA dispute down the line.

Here's what needs to be right every single month:

✅ PAYE — Pay-As-You-Earn tax withheld from employee salaries and submitted to SARS via your EMP201
✅ UIF — 1% from the employee, 1% from you. Due monthly, no exceptions
✅ SDL — Skills Development Levy at 1% of your total payroll (if your annual wage bill exceeds R500 000)
✅ COIDA — Annual return of earnings to the Compensation Fund. Often forgotten, always enforced
✅ Retirement Fund contributions — Must be paid over to the fund within 7 days of month-end, by law

One late EMP201. One missed UIF contribution. One miscalculated SDL. The penalties compound — and SARS has up to 5 years to come after you.
