Personal security tips: Training in public spaces
• Personal Safety
Vary your routine: Don’t use the same route or time every day; predictability can make you a target.
Stay in well-lit, populated areas: Avoid isolated routes, especially early mornings or late evenings.
Run or ride with a partner: There’s safety in numbers, and attackers are less likely to approach groups.
Trust your instincts: If something feels off, change direction, head to a safer area, or seek help.
Avoid displaying valuables: Don’t wear flashy jewellery or carry expensive gadgets openly.
• Tech & Communication
Use tracking apps with care: Share your live location only with trusted contacts, not publicly on social media.
Carry a phone with emergency contacts preloaded: Quick dial or SOS features can save time in emergencies.
Wear headphones wisely: If you listen to music, keep volume low or use only one earbud to stay alert.
Cyclists: Consider a discreet bike tracker (GPS) in case of theft.
• Cycling Specific
Secure your bike: Use a strong U-lock when stopping, even briefly.
Choose safe routes: Prefer bike lanes and known cycling paths over isolated shortcuts.
Helmet & lights: Always wear a helmet, and use front/back lights even during the day for visibility.
Defensive riding: Expect drivers not to see you; make yourself visible and predictable.
• Running Specific
Minimal carry: Take only essentials (ID, a little cash, phone, or safety whistle).
Wear reflective gear: Especially in low light conditions.
Self-defence readiness: Carry pepper spray (if legal in your area) or a small alarm.
Know safe havens: Map out police stations, shops, or public places along your route.
• General Awareness
Inform someone of your plans: Tell a friend/family your route and estimated return time.
Stay aware of surroundings: Regularly scan behind you and around you.
Hydration & health safety: Don’t overexert; exhaustion lowers awareness and reaction speed.
Emergency knowledge: Know local emergency numbers.
