Some SA institutions allow you to graduate by publication instead of a traditional thesis. Some don't. Some make it department-specific.

If your institution allows it, graduation by publication can be faster and gives you a career asset, a peer-reviewed paper with your name on it.

But it comes with its own requirements: STROBE for observational studies, CONSORT for trials, PRISMA for systematic reviews. Journal word limits, figure restrictions, and a specific reference style that may differ from your university's thesis format.

We don't know your institution's specific policy. That's the point — you need to find out before you start writing Chapter 4, because it changes how the entire document is structured.

WhatsApp us your institution and department. We'll tell you what we know, and if we don't know, we'll help you find out.

We just delivered a thesis with 57 references. Every single one has a DOI that resolves to a real paper in a real journal.

This matters because:

Your examiner will check. Not all of them, but enough. One fabricated reference and your credibility is gone.

AI generates plausible-sounding references that don't exist. We've audited theses where 14 of 77 references were AI-generated fabrications. The student didn't know.

Our pipeline:
- Literature from OpenAlex + PubMed (240M+ papers)
- Each reference checked against CrossRef
- DOI verification before it enters the document
- Vancouver numbered format, institution-specific

You can defend every citation in your thesis. That's what you're paying for.

Your supervisor wants a high quality study. Your registration window says you have 18 months.

Here's what actually determines whether you finish on time:

Retrospective > Prospective (for time management)
- Retrospective: data already exists. Collection takes weeks, not months.
- Prospective: you're waiting for patients to present. Could take a year.

Smaller, focused > Large, ambitious
- 150 patients with clear outcomes beats 500 patients with 40 variables you can't analyse.

Existing database > Primary data collection
- Hospital records, registries, laboratory systems — the data is there.

Ethics timeline matters more than study design
- HREC takes 8-16 weeks. Start your ethics application before you finalise your protocol.

The best study is the one you can defend in your exam and finish before your registration expires.

WhatsApp +27 67 534 0548 and we'll tell you honestly if your study design fits your timeline.

You collected the data. It's in an Excel file somewhere on your laptop.

You know what you want to say. You just don't know which test to run, how to structure the Results chapter, or whether your sample size is large enough to say anything meaningful.

This is where most registrars stall. Not at the beginning. Not at the end. Right here, between data and thesis.

We've run the statistics and written the Results chapter for over 60 registrars. Retrospective reviews, prospective cohorts, clinical audits, case series. From 40 patients to 2,600.

If the data exists, the thesis can be written.

AI in research is not cheating. But using it without understanding where the line is, that's a challenge.

Here's what most university policies actually agree on:

What AI can do:
- Grammar and language editing
- Structuring and outlining
- Converting verified data into academic prose
- Summarising literature you've already read

What AI cannot do:
- Generate references (they hallucinate)
- Run valid statistical analysis
- Replace your understanding of your own data
- Substitute for your intellectual contribution

The line: AI is a writing tool, not a research tool. It can write from verified inputs. It cannot verify anything itself.

At mmedlab, we use AI for writing only. Stage 5 of our 6-stage pipeline. Literature comes from live databases. Statistics come from your actual data. References are DOI-verified before they enter the document.

Your examiner checks references. AI does not.

Most registrars start writing before they understand the process. Then they get stuck, not because the work is hard, but because the sequence was wrong.

Here's the actual sequence at most SA institutions:

1. Topic selection (feasibility matters more than novelty)
2. Protocol development
3. Supervisor approval
4. HREC / Ethics committee submission
5. Review, corrections, approval
6. Data collection
7. Statistical analysis
8. Thesis writing
9. Submission and examination

Each step has a timeline. Each has a bottleneck. The biggest time sinks are ethics approval (8-16 weeks at most institutions) and data collection design (get this wrong and your stats don't work).

A good study isn't the most ambitious one. It's the one you can finish within your registration period with the data you can actually collect.

Comment "PROCESS" or WhatsApp +27 67 534 0548 and we'll send you a one-pager for your specific institution.

Every South African university now has an AI use policy. Most registrars don't know what theirs says. Ask us about your institutions AI policy.

Here's one we do know: Stellenbosch University requires two signed forms. Form 1 is an internal declaration discussed with your supervisor before submission. It lists specific categories like literature search, writing assistance, editing, citation formatting, and data analysis. Both student and supervisor sign. Form 2 is an examination declaration submitted with your thesis, confirming AI use was discussed and the student takes responsibility for all content.

Claude (Anthropic) is named on the SU form as an example AI tool. The forms are not punitive. They're designed to support "reflective and responsible engagement with AI in research."

Every institution has its own version of this. Some are stricter. Some are vaguer. The common thread: undisclosed AI use puts your submission at risk.

We build every thesis with full AI compliance documentation. Our methodology separates what AI does from what it cannot do, published at mmedlab.com/methodology.

WhatsApp us your institution name and we'll tell you what we know about their AI policy.

6–18 months behind. On average.

That is how far most SA registrars are on their thesis. Not because they lack ability. Because they are doing 80-hour weeks keeping patients alive, and the research keeps getting deprioritised because the person in front of you cannot wait.

The MMed is the last thing standing between you and your specialist registration. We remove that bottleneck.

Protocol development — 1 week
Statistical analysis — 1–2 weeks
Thesis completion — 3 weeks
Journal publication — 2-3 weeks

Fixed prices. Email only. You stay in control. We do the work.
