This beautiful 1947 Gibson L50 came in for some TLC and refurbishment yesterday afternoon. These vintage Gibsons are extremely rare, especially in this condition.
The only modification on the guitar is a pickup installation at some stage in it’s lifetime. The Gibson factory never installed pickups into these models. The guitar has a the “perfect” tone and is a very easy player. The only work to be done is a full strip-down of the tuners, clean, polish each part, dry lubrication, straighten the base plate and reassemble.

The mounting holes on the headstock are also stripped and will be repaired. The bridge will also be refurbished as someone filed string slots, but were rather careless with the string spacing. The volume and tone controls will be services and the k***s will be replaced with “as close to original” as possible.

Although the frets are very worn, we decided to leave them alone for now as the client is going on tour in the USA next week. The guitar has no fret buzz at all and we will sort the fret work out when he gets back.

On the workbench is a 1957/8 vintage gallo Mandolin. Passed down from Grandfather (who played it) to son and now grandson. The wood is very dry and brittle, as it has been neglected and hung on the wall over the years. Although no one in the family plays the instrument, they want it restored. This instrument has been a month and a bit in progress. I love these older instruments and although some of them present some challenges and intricate workmanship, I thoroughly enjoy working on them.

It’s been a while since updating the page. We’ve been concentrating more on building more workbenches, restoring a few heavier machinery and expanding our workspace. Photo’s to follow…

Here is just one of the repairs that came into the workshop over December. This little Ukelele has traveled the world with it’s owner. Unfortunately it suffered some damage to the back on the last leg of the owners journey back to South Africa.

After assessing the damage and taking into account the sentimental value of the instrument, we decided that the best remedy would be to replace the entire back of the Ukelele.

This instrument had a laminated (plywood) back. However, I could not find a supplier anywhere who had Mahogany ply in stock, never mind this thin. Luckily, I keep a few scrap guitars in storage and one of them had the perfect back that I could use.

After stripping the back off the guitar and removing the bracing, I ended up being able to get two backs for the Ukelele. (One has been put back into storage)
The photo’s below show the repair work from start to finish.
