πŸ’° Did you know not every payment you receive is automatically taxable?

Many business owners assume every rand that enters their bank account counts as taxable income - but that's not always the case.

For example:
βœ”οΈ A loan from the bank isn't taxable income.
βœ”οΈ Money you invest into your own business isn't considered business income.
βœ”οΈ Customer deposits may need different accounting treatment depending on the circumstances.

Understanding the difference can help you keep accurate financial records and avoid costly mistakes. When in doubt, ask us at [email protected] before making assumptions.

Ask yourself these 5 questions:
βœ… Do I know my monthly profit?
βœ… Can I cover three months of expenses if business slows down?
βœ… Am I up to date with my tax obligations?
βœ… Do I know who still owes me money?
βœ… Do I review my financial reports every month?

If you answered "no" to two or more, it might be time to pay closer attention to your finances. Good financial habits don't just keep you compliant - they help your business grow with confidence.

🚨 Auto-assessed by SARS? Don't assume it's 100% correct.

If you received an automatic tax assessment this month, you can now submit a corrected return if anything is missing or incorrect.

One of the biggest items taxpayers overlook?
Retirement annuity (RA) contributions.
Missing these could mean missing out on valuable tax deductions.

Before accepting your assessment:
βœ”οΈ Review all income and deductions
βœ”οΈ Check that your RA contributions have been captured correctly
βœ”οΈ Make any necessary corrections to avoid leaving money on the table

A quick review could make a big difference to your tax refund. Contact us at [email protected] for any inquiries.

Taxpayers who were auto-assessed can amend their returns, and tax experts warn that one of the easiest mistakes to overlook could cost them valuable deductions.

✈️ Travelling to or from South Africa? Take note of this important SARS update.

From 1 July 2026, all travellers entering or departing South Africa by air, land, sea, or rail are required to complete the SARS Online Traveller Declaration before travelling.

This new Customs requirement applies to:
βœ”οΈ South African citizens
βœ”οΈ Permanent residents
βœ”οΈ Foreign nationals
βœ”οΈ Business travellers
βœ”οΈ Children and infants (completed by a parent or legal guardian)

The declaration must be completed within 24 hours before travel and can be submitted online via the SARS Traveller Management System or the South African Traveller Management System (SATMS) mobile app.

Travellers should also ensure they understand the applicable Customs declaration requirements and duty-free allowances before travelling. Completing the declaration in advance will help avoid unnecessary delays at ports of entry and departure.

If you're travelling soon, make sure you're prepared.

SARS has warned that any travellers entering or leaving South Africa must now submit a mandatory online traveller declaration before they travel.

Tax season is around the corner - and so are the scammers.

As SARS begins auto-assessments from 1 July 2026 and tax filing opens on 13 July 2026, be cautious of emails and SMSs claiming to be from SARS. Scammers often take advantage of this time of year by sending fake refund notifications, settlement demands, letters of demand, and auto-assessment notices.

Before clicking any links or sharing personal information, always verify that communications are genuinely from SARS.
Stay alert. Stay protected.

Orca Fraud CEO Thalia Pillay has broken down some of the most common types of scams targetting taxpayers in South Africa.
