How are you managing your social media profiles or are you aware of the impact it could have on you finding employment? I was reading through an article the other day and the words “Someone is always looking for you online” really hit home because if you think about it, your activities on social media could be “under a microscope” at any given time.
When I am searching for someone, LinkedIn is the first place I start however, this does not mean that other social media platforms do not also get attention and that you should ignore the content you post on other platforms.LinkedIn is a platform that I can use to provide potential clients with information about my skills, instill a sense of security in using my services and also to network. It is therefore vitally important that my profile is correctly completed and that my activities always portray a professional image.
It is the same for anyone on LinkedIn, if you are employed your behaviour and image that you portray could have a positive or negative impact on your career growth. For a job-seeker, using the platform to secure employment and not taking the time to effectively use the tool, could have you missing out on opportunities that you are perfectly suited to.
How do you get yourself noticed and keep your profile professional?
1. Ensure that your LinkedIn profile is 100% complete and if you not sure how to, engage with a Professional service provider. Profiles that are not completed correctly can be ignored, costing you an opportunity.
2. Start networking, at first it doesn’t have to be people you don’t know, you can upload your online address book or link with past school friends, colleagues and Managers to start connecting.
3. Join groups that meet your objective or are of interest to you, provide input into conversations and continue connecting and growing your reach. Rather don't join if you can't add any value to the group.
4. Update your status every day, its not all about who you know but also what you know, this way you could get onto the radar of others. Ensure that the content you post is relevant to your objective and portrays a professional image at all times.
Keep yourself informed about new services offered and grow your personal brand to provide a positive reflection of who you are and what you can offer!
