Skill in construction is so scarce in this country and , it is not funny! Actually, it is so serious such that some government projects are of low quality and that messes up the designs and the purpose.

Projects in communities are aimed at providing skills and upgrading their CIDB level, in the true sense of practically upgrading the level. Not just purchasing the grade. Not bulldozing contractors and forcing them to pay protection fee throughout the duration of the project. No business ethics at all!

Some young men opt to look for a job in construction with no skill. Get to be rolled in to construction projects, get informal training and never get formal training. Mature in the industry without sharpening their skill to management level, impart to others........ and so on and so forth!

Sometimes, there is never an interest in training further....so sad and unfortunate! Our country is just not getting better! When will we be able to improve and master this wonderful craft without involving short-cuts.

There are so many free formal programs offered by the government and it's unfortunate that not so people make use of these opportunities.

The criteria to become a contractor in our country is either having enough money or making a loan. Skill is not always number one.....how sad that Regulations are ignored!

ADVICE IN SIMPLE LANGUAGE : get professional help before building. Invest in appointing a team that will guide you through the process. Avoid investing in rectifying errors created during the construction stage which had no professional monitoring or supervision.

Some Clients who do not have a clue about construction, rush to have a plan layout drawn up, submit to council for approval, cut off the services of an architect, engineers and quantity surveyor. Yet, these services are essential for your investment and are guaranteed a peace of mind. There is no saving in avoiding to pay fees to Consultants. These services will save you from rectifying the work at a cost.

Not all Builders are bad builders!
But if you are not going to appoint Cosultants for the construction stage be warned!
Clients need to protect themselves by signing an agreement on services to be rendered by the construction company or builder which will clearly state the terms and conditions of engagement. Eg. Work executed incorrectly must be paid by the responsible builder.
Things to check :
1. Historical background in terms of work previously done.
2. Check reputation of engagement.
3. Affiliations to Built Environmental bodies.
4. Engage the NHBRC.
