The RBIDZ Special Economic Zone is in attendance at the KwaZulu-Natal Women’s Day Celebration taking place today at the Jeffrey Zungu Sports Ground in Ixopo.

This year’s celebration holds special significance as South Africa commemorates 70 years since the historic 1956 Women’s March, under the theme “Empowered Women, Empower Nations.”

The event brings together government, communities, women’s organisations and stakeholders to honour the resilience and contribution of women, while advancing conversations and initiatives that promote women empowerment, economic participation and sustainable opportunities.

For the RBIDZ, involvement is important as the provincial programme provides an opportunity to share information about its economic development mandate and highlight opportunities that support inclusive participation in the economy.

As the RBIDZ Special Economic Zone, we celebrate this enduring legacy by recognising the women who continue to lead and create opportunities that contribute to the growth of our nation.

Day 2 Highlights| Southern Africa Conference on the AfCFTA

The Southern Africa Conference on the AfCFTA concluded with thought-provoking openinf remarks and presentation by Dr. Calistus Abang, Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the SARChI Chair on Borders and the AfCFTA at the University of Zululand, on "Informal Cross-Border Trade and the AfCFTA Implementation."

Dr. Abang highlighted that informal cross-border trade accounts for an estimated 30–40% of intra-SADC trade, valued at approximately US$17.6 billion annually, with nearly 70% of traders being women. Despite its significant contribution to regional economies, he noted that informal traders remain largely excluded from the implementation of the AfCFTA.

Drawing on field research conducted at the Beitbridge and Kosi Bay border posts, he revealed that many informal traders were unaware of the AfCFTA and had experienced little to no change in their day-to-day trading activities since the Agreement came into effect.

Dr. Abang called for practical interventions to make the AfCFTA more inclusive, including:
● Expanding simplified trade regimes to major SADC border crossings.
●Developing border passes tailored for informal traders.
●Tracking trade data by trader type to better understand who is benefiting.
● Designing SME and youth inclusion programmes that respond to the realities of informal traders, particularly women.

His closing message resonated strongly with delegates:

"AfCFTA will not become inclusive by accident. Informal traders are not waiting to be discovered by the Agreement; they are waiting for it to be built with them in view."

RBIDZ Special Economic Zone remains committed to supporting initiatives that advance regional integration, promote inclusive industrialisation, and unlock investment opportunities that contribute to the successful implementation of the AfCFTA.

|The Zone Projects In Progress|| The RBIDZ Special Economic Zone continues to make significant progress in delivering on its mandate of attracting investment and facilitating industrial development within the Zone.

Today, we , NYANZA LIGHT METALS, one of the strategic investments contributing to the growth and industrialisation of the RBIDZ. The company has commenced piling works as part of the site construction phase for its Titanium Dioxide chemical plant, marking an important milestone in the project's implementation.

This progress demonstrates how investment commitments are being translated into tangible on-the-ground development, creating momentum towards increased industrial activity, economic growth,and future job creation within the Zone. The RBIDZ remains to enabling investment projects that unlock value and drive sustainable regional development.

4th Annual Southern African Conference on the AfCFTA|30-31 July 2026 | Cape Town

Held under the theme "Advancing Regional Integration and Trade Through AfCFTA Implementation," the 4th Annual Southern African Conference on the AfCFTA brought together policymakers, trade experts, academics, investors, business leaders and development practitioners in Cape Town.

The conference served as a strategic platform to advance the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), with the core goal of bridging the gap between high-level policy and real-world commercial ex*****on. Discussions centred on translating policy into practical actions that unlock investment, strengthen regional value chains and accelerate Africa's industrialisation.

The RBIDZ Special Economic Zone
participated as delegates and exhibitor, showcasing its competitive value proposition as one of South Africa's leading Special Economic Zones and importantly engaged with delegates, highlighting the Zone's role in supporting export-led industrialisation, facilitating regional trade and creating investment opportunities aligned with the objectives of the AfCFTA.

Delivering the keynote address virtually, Ms. Cynthia Gnassingbé-Essonam, Director of Private Sector Engagement and Communications at the AfCFTA Secretariat, emphasised that the AfCFTA presents a transformative opportunity to reshape Africa's economic future.

She encouraged governments, the private sector and development partners to move beyond policy commitments and focus on implementation by removing barriers to trade, strengthening regional value chains, improving trade facilitation and creating an enabling environment that allows businesses-particularly SMEs, women-owned enterprises and young entrepreneurs-to participate meaningfully in intra-African trade.

Throughout the conference, speakers reiterated the importance of strengthening collaboration between the public and private sectors, improving logistics and transport infrastructure, leveraging digital trade, harmonising customs systems and regulations, and accelerating the implementation of AfCFTA protocols to unlock sustainable economic growth across the continent.

RBIDZ's participation reaffirms its commitment to driving industrialisation and demonstrates how Special Economic Zones can play a pivotal role in transforming continental trade ambitions into tangible economic opportunities that stimulate industrial growth and contribute to a more integrated and prosperous Africa.
