RICHMOND - HART VAN DIE KAROO.
In die uitgestrekte vlaktes van die Noord-Kaapse Karoo lê Richmond – ’n dorp wat stilweg verras, betower en ń blywende indruk maak. Wat op die oog af soos ’n klein Karoodorpie lyk, ontvou gou as ’n plek van ryk geskiedenis, warm mense, kultuur, kos, boeke en buitengewone ervarings. Richmond is nie net ’n "stopplek" nie – dit is ’n bestemming.
Richmond spog met 17 topklas gastehuise, waarvan baie toegerus is met swembaddens en lugversorging, wat dit ’n ideale oornag- en rusplek maak vir reisigers deur die Karoo. Van luuks tot knus – gasvryheid is hier ’n leefwyse.
’n Besonderse trekpleister is die dorp se indrukwekkende boekwinkels, waar alles gevind kan word van die nuutste gewilde titels tot skaars, antikwariese boeke wat ware versamelaars se harte vinniger laat klop. Dit word aangevul deur een van die grootste antiekwinkels in die Karoo, met duisende skatte en verrassings wat stories uit vervloë tye vertel.
Topgehalte wol-duvets het Richmond ook stil stil op die kaart geplaas. Hierdie duvets word met sorg vervaardig van premium natuurlike wol en bied uitstekende warmte in die winter en asemhaling in die somer. Die resultaat is ’n perfekte, gemaklike nagrus wat luuks, gesond en duursaam is. Wat dit besonders maak, is die fokus op vakmanskap, tradisie en aandag aan detail, wat elke duvet in ’n gesogte produk omskep. Vandag is Richmond trots bekend as ’n plek waar voortreflike wol-duvets van die hoogste gehalte gemaak, verkoop en uitgevoer word.
Kosliefhebbers sal nie teleurgesteld wees nie. Richmond het vyf uitstekende restaurante wat egte Karookos bedien – met topklas diens en gehalte wat met groot stede sterk kan meeding. Die slaghuis is ’n moet-besoek, met ’n wye verskeidenheid biltong, droëwors en lekkernye van uitstaande gehalte.
Kuns en kultuur blom hier, met drie kunsgalerye wat werke van bekende kunstenaars uitstal en tekoop aanbied. Net buite die dorp, sowat 20 km, wag die beroemdste padstal langs die N1 met sy skouspelagtige produkte en plaaslike lekkernye.

artefakte. Die dorp het selfs sy eie “Vegkop”, ’n unieke historiese verwysing wat dieper wortels van die verlede blootlê.
Praktiese geriewe ontbreek nie: ń bekende handelsmerk groot kruidenierswinkel, boere korporasie, bekende handelsmerk klere winkel, ’n superskoon 24/7 brandstofstasie, sowel as ’n dieseldepot met uitsonderlik lae pryse. Die dorp is slegs 60 km vanaf Deelfontein, waar die beroemde Yeomanry-hospitaal en -hotel tydens die Anglo-Boereoorlog gevestig is.
Richmond staan bekend vir sy baie lae misdaadsyfer, met feitlik geen gewelddadige misdaad nie. Die dorp volg ’n streng
“no hand outs”-beleid teen bedelary en skenkings aan die verskeie voedingskemas, waaronder Grassroots Hope in South Africa, word eerder aanbeveel.
Die gemeenskap is trots op hul dorp: skoon, veilig, rustig en goed versorg – selfs al presteer die munisipaliteit onder die verwagte norm, neem inwoners hande, rol moue op en hou telkemaal self die infrastruktuur in stand. Daar is ń baie aktiewe dierewelsyns- organisasie, asook uiters doeltreffende polisie, verkeer, poskantoor en ambulansdienste.
Richmond beskik oor ’n hospitaal, kliniek en aftree-oord, twee laerskole en ’n hoërskool wat kan spog met ’n 96% matriek-slaagsyfer! Die dorp word omring deur jagplase en plaasgastehuise, ideaal vir natuurliefhebbers en avonturiers.
Argitektuurliefhebbers sal die pragtige huise uit die middel-1800’s waardeer, met unieke ontwerpe en historiese karakter. Voeg hierby uitstekende sterrekyk, skoon, onbesoedelde lug, heerlike somers en selfs sneeu in die winter, en jy het ’n Karoo-ervaring soos min.
Maar bo alles is dit die vriendelike, warmhartige, opregte mense wat Richmond so besonders maak.
Richmond is ’n móét-stop en móét-oorslaap-plek vir toeriste.

In the vast plains of the Northern Cape Karoo lies Richmond – a town that quietly surprises, enchants and makes a lasting impression. Richmond’s history lives on in the town museum, with an impressive collection of Anglo-Boer War artefacts. The town even has its own “Vegkop”, a unique historical reference that reveals deeper roots of the past.
Practical amenities are not lacking: a well-known brand large grocery store, farmers’ corporation, well-known brand clothing store, a super clean 24/7 petrol station, as well as a diesel depot with exceptionally low prices. The town is only 60 km from Deelfontein, where the famous Yeomanry Hospital and Hotel were established during the Anglo-Boer War.
Richmond is known for its very low crime rate, with virtually no violent crime. The town follows a strict
“no hand outs” policy against begging and donations to the various feeding schemes, including Grassroots Hope in South Africa, are recommended.
The community is proud of their town: clean, safe, peaceful and well-kept – even if the municipality performs below the expected norm, residents take action, roll up their sleeves and maintain the infrastructure themselves. There is a very active animal welfare organization, as well as extremely efficient police, traffic, post office and ambulance services.
Richmond has a hospital, clinic and retirement village, two primary schools and a high school that boasts a 96% matric pass rate! The town is surrounded by hunting farms and farm guesthouses, ideal for nature lovers and adventurers.
Architecture lovers will appreciate the beautiful houses from the mid-1800s, with unique designs and historical character. Add to this excellent stargazing, clean, unpolluted air, glorious summers and even snow in winter, and you have a Karoo experience like few others.
But above all, it is the friendly, warm-hearted, genuine people that make Richmond so special.
