The story of polystyrene goes back to 1839.

That year, Berlin apothecary Eduard Simon was experimenting with styrene obtained from storax resin when he observed it transform into a resinous material. Today, we recognise that transformation as the polymerisation of styrene into polystyrene.

Commercial polystyrene came much later, but it’s fascinating to think that the beginnings of such a familiar modern material date all the way back to the 19th century.

Today, the conversation around materials has evolved too.

We’re no longer only asking what they can be used for.

We’re asking what happens to them when that use is finished.
