Spring reminds us what nature does so beautifully:

It renews.
It regenerates.
It begins again.

Perhaps that's something worth learning from.

When materials can be recovered and recycled, their first purpose doesn't have to be their last.

What goes down doesn't simply disappear.

Waste that isn't managed responsibly can travel far beyond the place where it was discarded.

Our waterways connect communities, ecosystems and ultimately much larger bodies of water.

Ahead of World Lake Day tomorrow, it's worth remembering that protecting our water doesn't only happen at the water's edge.

It starts with the choices we make upstream.

Dispose responsibly. Recycle where possible. Keep valuable materials in circulation.

Because what we leave behind can travel further than we think.

For 76 years, Pluto was a planet.

Then we looked at things differently.

Sometimes, changing what we know means changing the labels we use.

The same thinking can apply much closer to home.

We call something "waste” when we're finished with it.

But if that material can be recovered, recycled and put back into use, is waste really the right word?

Perhaps some things aren't waste at all.

They're resources waiting for their next purpose. ♻️

Before you bin it, think.

That moment when you're finished with something might seem insignificant.

But what happens next matters.

Is it contaminated?
Can it be separated?
Can it be collected?
Can it be recycled?

Better waste management starts before something reaches the bin.

It starts with knowing that "finished with” doesn't necessarily mean “finished.”

A few seconds of thought can help keep valuable materials in circulation.

“Disposable” is a funny word.

It makes something sound as though it has no value once we've finished using it.

But a material doesn't automatically become worthless just because its first job is done.

When recyclable materials are separated, collected and processed correctly, they have the opportunity to remain in circulation instead of simply becoming waste.

Maybe we need to stop asking:

“Where do I throw this away?”

And start asking:

“Where should this go next?”

We often talk about preparing young people for the future.

But we should also be asking:

What kind of future are we preparing for them?

The resources we use, the waste we create and the choices we make today will shape the world they inherit tomorrow.

Recycling is only one piece of that responsibility, but every piece matters.

Let's leave the next generation more than good advice.

Let's leave them a planet worth inheriting.
