Good morning everyone. Hope you have had a wonderful week and you're preparing for a fantastic weekend.
This week our topic is canine parvovirus:

"But hold up, what is parvovirus?"

Let me tell you: The parvovirus is a highly contagious disease in dogs. This virus attacks rapidly, dividing cells such as those in the lymph nodes, intestinal lining and bone marrow. This results in a depletion of white blood cells which is necessary for the immune system to function.

"OK now that we know what it is; what does it do?"

The virus continues its attack on the body causing rapid death to intestinal cells leading to the breaking away of the intestinal lining, vomiting, diarrhoea and severe intestinal bleeding. This (if left untreated) will eventually lead to the death of your puppy.

"This is all very scary, but how do dogs catch it?"

The parvovirus spreads easily from dog to dog through direct or indirect contact with their faeces. They become infected through oral contact with the faeces, infected soil or fomites.

"What are the syptoms involved and how do we prevent the animal from catching it?"

The symptoms include: lethargy, vomiting, anorexia, bloody diarrhoea, Dehydration and collapse.
The only to prevent the parvovirus is through vaccination.
So insure that your pets are all vaccinated up to date and let's keep them happy and healthy. And please remember other people pets too and if yours does happen to contract the parvovirus to keep it away from other dogs as to prevent more animals from catching it.

I do hope this has been helpful and informative. Have a wonderful weekend and always remember to love and play with your pets and take your dog's out for a walk, it's good for their health.

Good morning everyone
It has been a while since the last post on this page and for that I apologise. We here at Pet Pals have decided to start posting some interesting topics about our pets, how to look after them, take care of them, look out for certain things and many other useful or interesting tips. I hope that you will find this insightful and in some cases useful.

Today's topic: Understanding the spaying of dogs.

*Let's start with what is a spay?* A spay is the complete surgical removal of the female dogs reproductive tract.

*What are the benefints?* The most common reason owners spay their pets is to prevent an unwanted litter of pups, though it also has other beneficial outcomes:
- During a heat cycle the behaviour in the female dog changes, this causes the dog to actively seek out male dogs and in doing so may attempt to escape from you garden putting them in harms way due to traffic; fights with other animals and other dangers.
- In female canines the production of Oestrogen is one of the primary causes of mammary cancer, this is one of the most common tumours in dogs
- It is possible for tumours to occur in the uterus and ovaries of the canine, the spaying of an animal can eliminate the possibility of this occurring.
- There is a possibility that a canine can develop a uterine infection following a heat cycle. This infection is called pyometra and can be potentially fatal

*When is the right time to spay a dog?* There has been sufficient research conducted to indicate that spaying a canine before their first heat cycle reduces the risks of mammary gland cancer later on in life to almost zero. If the dog is spayed after the first heat cycle then the risks are slightly reduced, but after 3 heat cycles there is no protective influence of developing mammary cancer due to spaying. The average age to preform a spaying is usually before 6 months of age.

*How to care for your dog after the procedure*
- On arrival back home with your pet offer only small amounts of food and water at first (give your pet time to settle down).
- Do not allow other pets or children to pester her.
- Inspect the incision daily and look for infection, swelling, redness or discharge. If any is seen contact your vet. If you think the incision is open then contact your vet directly as this may be an emergency.
- Do not allow your pet to go swimming or give her a bath for the first ten days after surgery or until the stitches have been removed.

I hope this information has helped you into better understanding your pet and how to look after them. Let us all look after our pets the best we can for at the end of the day they are more than just a furry companion, they are part of the family.

Have a wonderful day and stay safe through your travels

Hi everyone

Easter is this weekend and with it loads of good times and plenty chocolate!!! With that in mind please be careful with chocolate around your four legged family as it is not good for them at all. Chocolate is not part of a pets diet and in such we should refrain from giving them even the smallest of pieces as this can upset their tummies :(
So be safe and careful this easter as to avoid any upset tummies and horrible visits to the vet.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
