๐ Happy World Oceans Day! ๐
Our oceans cover over 70% of the Earth, but they are so much more than just a beautiful blue expanse, they are a massive, dynamic, life-sustaining science lab! At Doc Scientia, we love exploring the wonders of the deep through the lens of Natural and Physical Sciences.
Protecting our oceans starts in the classroom. Here is how you can bring the magic of marine science to your learners today:
โข Dive into Natural Sciences: Explore marine food webs and local ecosystems. Discuss how microscopic phytoplankton are the unsung heroes of our planet, producing roughly half of the oxygen we breathe!
โข Explore Physical Sciences: Investigate the physics of ocean currents and waves, or dive into the chemistry of the sea by exploring how water's specific heat capacity regulates our global climate and the impacts of ocean acidification.
โข Local Focus: Take a moment to appreciate our incredible South African coastlines, from the kelp forests of the Atlantic to the warm currents of the Indian Ocean, and discuss why keeping our local beaches plastic-free matters.
Teachers and parents, over to you! What is your favourite ocean fact to share with your learners, or do you have a fun experiment that demonstrates marine science? Let us know in the comments! ๐๐
