Smarter Water Heating Without Compromising Comfort

Hot water is one of the biggest energy consumers in many homes and businesses. Traditional electric geysers rely on high-power resistance elements that repeatedly switch on to bring water back up to temperature after each period of use.

⚡ ELECTRICITY DOESN’T LOOK DANGEROUS — AND THAT’S EXACTLY THE PROBLEM.

We see electricity every day.

We switch on lights.
We charge our phones.
We plug in appliances.
We start machines.
We run businesses.

Because electricity is invisible, silent and usually reliable, we often forget just how much energy is moving behind the walls.

You can't see 230 V.

You can't smell a loose connection.

You can't hear insulation slowly breaking down.

And you certainly can't see the heat building up inside an overloaded cable.

Yet a small electrical problem can develop quietly for weeks, months or even years before something goes wrong.

🔥 A loose connection can become a hot connection.
🔥 A hot connection can become a damaged connection.
🔥 A damaged connection can become an electrical fire.

🤔 BUT WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR SAFETY?

This is where many people are surprised.

Under Regulation 2 of the Electrical Installation Regulations, 2009, the user or lessor of an electrical installation is responsible for its safety, safe use and maintenance. SANS 10142-1 is the wiring standard incorporated into the electrical safety regulations.

In other words, having an electrician install or inspect your electrical installation doesn't mean you can forget about it afterwards.

Safety is an ongoing responsibility.

If you notice:

⚠️ A socket becoming hot
⚠️ Burning smells
⚠️ Flickering lights
⚠️ Repeated circuit-breaker trips
⚠️ Damaged cables
⚠️ Sparks or arcing
⚠️ Cracked or discoloured plugs

Instead of asking:

"Does everything still work?"

⚠️ THE DANGERS OF OVERLOADING EXTENSION CABLES 🔌🔥

Extension leads are convenient, but using them incorrectly can create a serious electrical and fire hazard.

An extension cable is designed to carry a specific maximum electrical load. When too many appliances are connected to one extension cable, the cable can be forced to carry more current than it was designed for.

🔥 What can happen when an extension cable is overloaded?

1. Cable overheating
Excessive current causes the conductors to heat up. If the cable remains overloaded, the insulation can soften, melt or become damaged.

2. Fire risk
An overheated cable, plug or connection can ignite nearby combustible materials. What starts as a simple extension lead can become a serious electrical fire.

3. Damaged plugs and sockets
Overloading can cause plugs, multi-plugs and socket outlets to become hot, discoloured or burnt.

4. Voltage drop
A heavily loaded or undersized extension cable can cause voltage drop, potentially affecting the performance and lifespan of connected equipment.

5. Circuit breaker trips
Repeated tripping of a circuit breaker may be a warning that the circuit is being overloaded or that there is an electrical fault.

6. Hidden damage
Running extension cables under carpets, rugs or furniture can prevent heat from escaping and make overheating harder to detect.

⚡ Common mistakes to avoid

❌ Connecting multiple high-power appliances to one extension lead
❌ Connecting one extension lead into another
❌ Using damaged or undersized extension cables
❌ Running cables under carpets or rugs
❌ Using extension leads that become hot during operation
❌ Using cheap or poor-quality multi-plugs
❌ Ignoring repeated circuit-breaker trips

💡 High-power appliances need special attention

Appliances such as heaters, kettles, irons, microwaves, washing machines and portable air conditioners can draw significant current.

Whenever possible, high-power appliances should be connected directly to an appropriately rated wall socket/circuit rather than sharing an extension lead with other heavy loads.

🛠️ SAFETY TIP

If an extension cable, plug or socket becomes hot, smells burnt, shows signs of melting/discolouration, or repeatedly trips the circuit breaker — stop using it immediately.

Don't simply replace the fuse or reset the breaker and continue using it without finding the cause.
