Is your geyser set to the right temperature?
I get asked all the time: "What’s the best temperature for my geyser, and does the position (vertical vs. horizontal) really matter?
Yes, it makes a huge difference to your shower time!
The Science of the "Shower":
Your 150L Kwikot geyser acts like a thermal battery. To get a perfect 40°C shower, you mix your hot water with cold water.
If your tank stays "stratified" (hot on top, cold on bottom), you get way more hot water than the tank's capacity :-)
Here is how much usable 40°C shower water you get from a 150L tank (assuming standard stratification):
Geyser SettingTotal 40°C Water Available (without heating element on):
*50°C~200 Liters - Energy Stored Above 40°C 1.74 kWh
*60°C~250 Liters - Energy Stored Above 40°C 3.48 kWh
*65°C~280 Liters - Energy Stored Above 40°C 4.35 kWh
Vertical ( | ) vs. Horizontal ( -- ):
Vertical (The Winner):
Stratification Efficiency: High (~90–95%)
Because the tank stands tall, the hot and cold water stay separated much better. You get the full benefit of that hot water for longer. Always choose vertical if you have the space!
Horizontal:
Stratification Efficiency: Moderate (~75–85%)
Because the tank lies on its side, the cold water entering the tank mixes with the hot water faster. This "blurring" of the temperature means your water will start cooling down slightly sooner than it would in a vertical setup.
Solar/Hybrid Strategy:
For solar PV heating, it is often better to store water at 65°C during the day. Because you have more "thermal headroom,". You have enough energy stored that even with some mixing, the outlet temperature remains well above 40°C for the duration of your shower.
Our Pro Tips:
If your geyser is horizontal: Try setting your thermostat 5°C higher than you would for a vertical one. This helps compensate for the extra mixing.
Save energy: 50°C–55°C is great for daily efficiency.
Safety first: If you run your geyser at 50°C and dont replenish the water atleast once in 2 days , make sure to crank it up to 60°C+ at least once a week to prevent bacteria growth.
