WE DIDN'T JUST TAKE A SEAT - WE BROUGHT OUR LIVED REALITIES TO THE TABLE.🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

Colour Me Foundation, in partnership with the South African Human Rights Commission, brought our LGBTQIA+ community together with SAPS, Home Affairs, the NPA, Department of Health and other stakeholders around one critical question:🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈✍🏾

Is service delivery truly inclusive of LGBTQIA+ people?

The conversation was honest, progressive and sometimes uncomfortable — exposing gaps in understanding, sensitisation and the everyday experiences of our community.

Our Trans community showed up, our voices were heard, and our rights remained firmly rooted in the Constitution.🏳️‍⚧️

One message was clear: inclusion cannot live only in policy. It must be experienced in practice.

The dialogue happened. The gaps were identified. Now the work continues.✍🏾🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

WE CAME TO THE TABLE — AND THE CONVERSATION SHOWED US WHY THESE DIALOGUES MATTER.🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️🎙️

Yesterday, Colour Me Foundation, in partnership with the South African Human Rights Commission, hosted our first LGBTQIA+ Dialogue at the Klerksdorp Mayor’s Hall, bringing our community into conversation with key stakeholders including SAPS, Home Affairs, the NPA, Department of Health and other role players.

At the centre of the dialogue was one important question: Is service delivery truly inclusive of LGBTQIA+ people?🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

The engagements were honest, progressive and, at times, uncomfortable. They revealed gaps not only in service delivery, but also in the understanding of LGBTQIA+ identities, lived realities and the protections already provided through our legislation and policies.

There were triggering moments. There were difficult questions. But our community stood firm — and so did the Constitution, legislation and policies that affirm our dignity and rights.

We were especially proud to see our Trans community present, visible and participating in conversations that directly affect their everyday experiences of public services.🏳️‍⚧️

One thing became clear: sensitisation cannot be a once-off exercise. Government departments and institutions need continuous engagement with LGBTQIA+ communities if inclusive service delivery is going to move from policy into practice.

This was not about having all the answers in one room. It was about opening the room for accountability, learning and progress.

The dialogue happened. The gaps were identified. Now the work must continue.🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

I DO NOT HAVE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN WHO I AM AND WHERE I COME FROM.🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

Heritage is more than where we come from. It is the language we speak, the families that raised us, the communities that shaped us, the stories we inherited — and the freedom to live our own story fully.

For many LGBTQIA+ people in rural areas and small towns, being ourselves can still feel like we are being asked to step outside of our culture. But being q***r does not make us less African. Being Trans does not erase our roots. Our identities do not cancel our heritage.🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️

This Heritage Month, we honour those who came before us by refusing to disappear from the communities we also call home.

We belong in our families. We belong in our cultures. We belong in our villages and towns. We belong in our heritage. And we will not shrink to prove it. 🏳️‍🌈✊🏾

There are events you attend… and then there are moments you’ll remember because you were THERE.📢

On 03 October, we’re bringing generations of q***r joy together — the sounds we grew up on meeting the sounds moving us now. Old School vs New School. One stage. One community. One massive celebration of being free enough to show up exactly as you are.

The line-up is stacked. The theme is BLACK & WHITE. The people are getting ready. And somewhere, a group chat is already deciding what everyone is wearing.🤍🖤🔌

This is Pride Month Celebration: Let’s Get Together.

Not just something to watch online the next morning.
Something to say, “I WAS THERE.”

OUR QUEERNESS DOES NOT MAKE US LESS AFRICAN. OUR HERITAGE IS OURS TOO.🖤🩶

We come from villages, townships and small towns. We come from families, clans, languages, traditions and communities that shaped us long before the world had an opinion about who we should be.📢🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Being LGBTQIA+ does not disconnect us from our roots. We are still our mothers’ children. We are still our ancestors’ descendants. We are still part of the story of where we come from.

This Heritage Month, we celebrate every q***r person who has had to hold onto their identity while still fighting to belong in the very communities they call home.

You do not have to choose between being African and q***r. Rural and proud. Rooted and free.

We are not outside of our heritage. We ARE heritage too.🩶🖤🏳️‍🌈

As August closes, we carry more than memories with us. We carry the courage, resistance and resilience of women who continue to make space for themselves and others — often in places where being seen, heard and respected is still a fight.

For the women in our rural communities and small towns.
For q***r women. For young women finding their voices. For every woman who has chosen to keep going, we see you.🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

Women’s Month was never meant to contain our voices for 31 days.

We take them with us into September.

THREE DISTRICTS. ONE CONVERSATION. OUR RIGHTS BELONG EVERYWHERE. 🏳️‍🌈

This September, Colour Me Foundation, in partnership with the South African Human Rights Commission, is taking an important conversation across the North West Province.

From Klerksdorp to Vryburg to Mahikeng, we are creating spaces where LGBTQIA+ people can speak, be heard and engage on the realities that affect our everyday lives — rights, dignity, inclusion and access to services.📢🏳️‍⚧️

These dialogues may be intimate, but the conversation is anything but small.

For q***r people living in rural areas and small towns, access to dignity and services cannot depend on where you live. Human rights must reach all of us.🏳️‍🌈

What you are building with Colour Me Foundation is bigger than attendance — it is a community becoming more visible, more connected and more certain that we belong here. That is resilience too: growing louder, stronger and more joyful together.🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️
