LEVEL 2 WEATHER WARNING FOR DAMAGING WINDS: FRIDAY, 25 NOVEMBER (15:00) – SUNDAY, 27 NOVEMBER 2022 (00:00)
Affected Municipalities: Bergrivier, Cederberg, City of Cape Town, Kamiesberg, Matzikama, Nama Khoi, Overstrand, Richtersveld, Saldanha Bay, Swartland, Table Bay
Discussion: Strong to near gale force southerly to south-easterly winds (50-60km/h gusting 70km/h) are expected offshore between Alexander Bay and Cape Columbine from Friday afternoon, spreading down to Hermanus on Saturday and Sunday. These strong winds are expected to be strongest in the afternoons and evenings on each day. Along with the strong winds, wave heights of 3.0 to 4.0m are expected with short periods which will lead to rough and choppy seas.
Impact: Difficulty in navigating at sea due to strong winds and quick successive steep waves can be expected. Small vessels and personal watercraft (e.g. kayaks) are at risk of taking on water and capsizing in a locality. Localised disruption of small harbours and ports for short periods. Build-up of sand likely on coastal roads in False Bay.
Instruction: Small boats and personal water craft must stay away from the open sea and seek the shelter of a harbour, river estuary or protected bay. Motorists should take caution when traveling on roads covered with sand as roads may be slippery.
